Travelling from Munich to Berlin for winter markets
Discussion
I've been to Germany quite a bit, but never in winter. I'm planning to fly to Munich in the first week of December with the OH, with the intention of visiting Christmas markets, generally enjoying the festive atmosphere and maybe doing the odd day trip.
We only want to stay in Munich for a day or two because we've both been before (albeit in summer), and plan on going up to Berlin for a few days. We'll fly home from there.
Our options are to get the night train from Munich to Berlin, or to get a normal daytime train and spend a night somewhere in between the two.
I've been to Nuremberg before and liked it, but is there anywhere else pretty/interesting/good in December that I should consider between Munich and Berlin? Lovely old towns with good beer and nice Christmassy markets/events would be nice - or just somewhere with nice scenery.
The only caveat is that it has to be on a majorish train route.
Any suggestions? Feel free to suggest things we shouldn't miss in Munich and Berlin at that time of year too...

The question is do you want a a touristy Christmas market or a good one. München and Nürnberg will be full of tourists for the first 3 weeks of December and will be pleasent. If you are travelling towards Berlin then I would try and stop in either Bamberg or Coberg. Both are beautiful old towns that have great bier and I'm sure the Glüwein will also be good too!
