Can anyone recommend me a good Insurance company...
Discussion
We are with M&S for our cat - they come up high on the which report for both cats and dogs. They were very good with our last cat and paid out without any hassles (and it was a fair bill by the end thanks to a nasty tumour, and we had only had her less than 2 years).
Pet plan comes highly recommended (though you do pay for this!), but with the right cover they will insure your pet for any life long illness unlike other companies.

Shop around, check excesses and cover levels, and have a think about what you might actually need:
- how healthy / long-lived is the breed in general?
- how far are you from busy roads?
Pet insurance is a commercial undertaking. Insurers want to take your money, rather than have you take theirs.
Premiums and excesses are calculated to ensure this.

Need some dog insurance.
Parents just brought a puppy. First dog ever in the family.
Any thing I should be looking out for with the insurance side of things? Any thing to stay away from?
The dog is a 11 week old cross between and springer and a spaniel I believe.
Cheers
A Springer Spaniel crossed with which other Spaniel? Parents just brought a puppy. First dog ever in the family.

I'd recommend petplan, go for a lifetime policy, more expensive but worth it. I pay about £25 per month for my Springer X Cocker Spaniel.

Ha I'm not up with the dog world. I believe that is it. They calling it a sprocker?? mix between a cocker and springer? On the petplan free insurance note for 2 weeks they have it down as a Cocker.

They dog is 12 weeks old. Not near no major roads. Parents doon't have any health conditions. Should and hopefully be a healthly dog for the 12 month cover period for insurance terms.
Had a compare last night and comparing the different covers and companies there seem to be a massive differences in price.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^This. I have had Pet Plan for all my Golden Retrievers (3 in total) and never had a claim questioned or an issue making a claim. Yes they are expensive but you get what you pay for and they offer lifetime cover with no annual limit on their top level policies.
Read the small print about cover levels versus age and annual claim limits on other offerings as they are usually not up to the same standard as Pet Plan.

Their cover, IMHO is better than PetPlan. Their excess is cheaper, they payout quickly, their values are higher and they don't exclude injuries that have been treated before (unless pre-existing)
I'm another with M&S and after my cat was run over recently I cannot recommend them highly enough. He was referred to a specialist and the bill was massive but they paid quickly and without problems. Even with the generous claim limit on their policy the bill still exceeded this but the excess was deducted from the total bill not from the maximum claim figure so I was paid the full amount.
Still couldn't save him though

I have been with M&S and they paid out when we needed them to. We are now with esure and they have also paid out when needed. We are hoping that they will be pay out for the latest incident. Our Collie had a fit last Sunday and we took him to emergency vets. We have also had bloodwork done at our vets for this. If this comes back all clear, then it's CT scan.
The renewal prices do go up after a claim.
We are now as good as tied into esure due to the claims we have made and that other insurers will not cover pre-existing conditions.

We're with Petplan and have lifetime cover, our only regret is we went for the lower level of cover so only £4k per year.
Our Springer will be four later this month (assuming she gets through her current issues)
We have just calculated that we have paid around £1300 in premiums over the four years and we will have claimed just short of £9k. Plus we paid £1k when we ran out of insurance money in year two.
She was a perfectly normal pup, the parents were healthy but she developed an Auto Immune condition in her first year - it took ages to diagnose because "she's complex" and we're on first name terms with the University Hospital vets. She is currently back at the Vet Hospital having had surgery for a bowel obstruction, pancreatitis and peritonitis - this will be another insurance maxing year.
I don't think that you can guesstimate whether you will claim, nobody knows - Spaniels are a bit prone to injuries - my friend's chased a bird over a cliff when being walked by someone else, they are also fairly prone to eating things that they shouldn't.
I would be concerned with the non specialist insurers that they might pull out of the market as ?Halifax? did recently, leaving your lifetime cover being worthless.
My view was and is that I can't afford to spend the money that might be needed on vet treatment and I don't ever want to be in the position where I am making decisions about whether my dog has a chance of living or dying based on the state of my bank balance so we bought insurance.
