Newest, lowest mileage golf-sized car for £5-6k

The GF needs a new car, she doesn't really care about speed or handling, just wants something cheap to run which is decently sized and comfortable.

Looked at the mk5 golf which she like but the examples in her budget are a bit higher mileage and older. The whole point of the exercise is to get the newest car she can for the money.

So far Astras are looking good, about 40k miles and 2009 for that money or less.

Any other suggestions?

Fiat 500.

Can get a 08/09 for less than 6K with less than 50K miles on it.

Before anybody jumps in with a 500 is smaller than a golf the OP never stated what MK golf

Check out Kia Ceed, Rio etc or Hyundai i20/i30.

Unlike the Astra, it's still got 4 years of warranty left on it.

You'd probably get a significantly lower mileage one for the top end of the budget, that was just the first suitable one that I found.

Oh, c'mon, you know full well the OP would not be referring to the size of a MK1 Golf.

He even said "decently sized". Either way, it's clear a 500 would be too small.

Fiat Panda - SURELY?!

You can get less than 2 year old Pandas with under 10k on the clocks for £5k

OR Skoda Fabia represent good value and aren't that much smaller than a golf.

Or for novelty purposes you could buy "THE Reasonably Priced Car" AKA the Lacetti HAHA

The Fabia is exactly the same size as the Polo, because it's built on the same floor-pan. It's nowhere near the size of a Golf!

Suzuki Swift 1.5 5 door.
Great little cars.
Not as large as a Golf but not far off, feels a fair bit larger than a Polo.
Drive well, no known reliability isses, much cheaper to buy than a Golf.

If the two main priorities are the newest and lowest mileage car you can then as others have said, it's Korea all the way. Kia Cee-d, Chevrolet Aveo, that kind of thing. All got long warranties as well.

To whoever recommended Megane's, the OP said "reliable", in which case steer clear of anything Renault!

My 08 Sport Megane has a long list of electrical "quirks", I.e. Stuff that doesn't work!

I am very aware hence the not that much smaller than a mk5 golf which is what her budget would get.

If you consider the footprint of a fabia compared with a mk5 Golf it is only 20cm shorter and 15cm narrower, the boot is 50L smaller but still 300L which is only 40L less than a Kia Ceed, and larger than a Hyundai I20.
