Just busy getting quotes for insurance. When they say...is the car modified, what do you and don't you list. Looking at some of your cars you could be on the phone all day listing mods you have made. I always though this question was loaded towards MAX Power readers with their Nova sitting on 19inch rims and the wings off a 747 for a spoiler! But do you mention a new induction kit or a re-mapped ecu, uprated springs, and all that kind of thing....or do you tentatively say..."no it's all standard!"

Does anyone know how failing to mention a re-mapped ecu, or stiffer spings, effects your insurance, and what happens if you claim and don't mention these things.

I find insurance companies are getting less and less interested in your car and more interested in selling add-ons, home insurance, breakdown cover, car hire cover, personal injury stuff etc.

Any thoughts?

You should definitely tell them about anything non-standard that might affect the performance or handling of the car and, as Colin says, your best bet is probably to tell them about everything, within reason, as I think they could even claim that some mods might may the car more attractive to thieves!

AFAIK, if you claimed and they found out that you had an undeclared mod, they would still pay any 3rd party claim but would probably try and wriggle out of making any payment to you.

Yep, tell them everything ....mostly.

I hit a huge hole in the road and had to claim because it bent both front and nearside alloys on my VW but I have 18" audi TT rims and they said they wouldn't pay out even though they are cheaper than the original wheels, stupid or what?

They were fair in the end and gave me the opportunity to declare them and pay another £45 in premiums! And they paid out OK.

When I renewed my TVR insurance I mentioned that I have different wheels on the S and they asked sensible questions and discovered that they are a quarter of the price of the original wheels which would only be secondhand anyway and they agreed that I should not pay any more in premiums, as if they had to payout it would cost them considerably less. Other bits such as new side repeaters I haven't bothered mentioning, or rear lights as they are a standard replacement, nothing too fancy. I didn't even think to mention the stereo....

Best to as its more atractive to thieves, so any damage they do by breaking in and removing it might not get paid out

Same again, & my ECU remap didnt affect the premium one iota, the imobilisor being removed did however... but you cant go wrong if you tell them everything... unless of course your name is podie, in which case dont tell them everything, or anything, especially not about your job anyway, or something like that

If you got the old immobiliser removed and haven't fitted another one, then you're obvioulsly not of a nervous disposition!

When my old immobiliser packed up, I had the option of having it disabled for a few days until I could get a new one fitted, but the thought of leaving the S parked up without an immobiliser brought me out in a cold sweat.

My new Thatcham approved transponder immobilier only cost £160 fitted and was much more convenient than the old one with the little widget that had to be touched against the pad each time.

Me, lazy?

Hmmmmmmm. Imobilisor problems left me stranded, not liking imobilisors generally, and distrusting of them. I guess I should invest in a new one, but not before Ive had some feedback on the possibility of starting a "Support UK BOB financially" fund. -Rob

My old one left me stranded twice, the second time necessitating the replacement, but I still just couldn't bring myself to leave the S so vulnerable without one, especially after flygirl's V8S was nicked by joyriding scrotes!
