Buying a car from Northern Ireland?

First clue is I don't live there. 
What's involved? I've had a look online and it seems to be a bit contradictory at times.
Am I right in saying that if I wanted to I could run it on the NI plates over here without any trouble at all? Would that cause any problems for tax and insurance purposes? I also believe I can get if re-registered into a proper UK plate at my local DVLA office if I fill in a couple of forms? Is the MOT test identical?
Any advice welcome!
