Hi,

Another "what car?" unfortunately guys so please bear with me. I am looking for a car for my wife that will be suitable for her when she has a baby. As a minimum I think it needs to have 4 doors, however I don't want/think we need anything too big (4x4's/massive estates etc) as we live in London where residential parking is tight, nor anything too showy to keep unwanted attention at bay. Hence my thinking of premium 5 door hatchback sector.

Car will mainly be used on short journeys to shops etc during the week and the occasional drive to family and friends further afield at weekends, and driving once a year to France. Max of about 5k miles a year I would have thought so not interested at all in a diesel if I am being honest. I also want to be able to enjoy it when I can so needs to be at least a little interesting in some respect.

What are the general thoughts and opinions on the above two choices? I quite like both, so far I have test driven a 130i Msport but it was a touch pricey/ropey. How does the Audi stack up? Any others I should look at in the same sector?

I have a budget of about 6-7k max, for a pre Mar 06 car (cheaper tax).

Or would I be better off with something else/cheaper/bigger/different etc.

FYI Others I have thought about are the 159/Xtype/3 series)

Thanks in advance and over to you.

330i e46 would be a good shout, has all the usual toys and most if not all had parking sensors (great for london)

Or what about a mk5 gti golf... Great car, loads about to choose from?

Audi 3.2 is a nice choice, plenty of these about but stay away from early ones with dsg auto boxes.

Thanks - For some reason I had overlooked the Golf GTI.

I quite fancied something with a bigger engine so it was off the radar as the r32 doesnt seem to have depreciated as much as the 130 or the A3 3.2.

Indeed that looks like it could also be an option having just browsed some adverts. I guess in the same vein as a Leon Cupra of similar vintage? Are they essentially the same underneath?
