How hard is it to drill out an ignition barrel?

Are they made of hardened metal?

I've got a Focus steering column from a scrappy without the ignition key and I want to get the airbag off.

When I've drilled out the barrel I'm going to replace it with my own (assuming I can get that out without too much hassle).

I don't think they need drilling out, you might have to attack some tamper-proof bolts though.

Yep, not sure if that is still the case though.

Oh, and be careful with the airbag.

If you want to get the airbag off why not just remove the airbag?

Also this. You don't need to take the ignition barrel out to remove the airbag.

Can't get to the airbag release slots without moving the wheel around. Column is off the car.

steering lock should be held on with shear bolts. tap them round with a hammer and punch. dont throw the airbag at any walls or in a fire and it will be fine.

Easier to just grind the column off just before the steering wheel surely??
