In the real world, how much difference in performance should I expect for that sort of increase? Slightly quicker and better pickup from steady speed? Or substantially better?

Depends how much you have now, and where in the powerband it makes that extra power. 40bhp and 59lbft sounds like it'll be below 5000rpm which will be useful, but it'll obviously make more difference on a 100bhp car than it will a 600bhp one.

It'll depend where that 40 extra horses is produced. If it's all at the top end then you won't notice it unless you rev the nuts off it.

It's a diesel that's running 177bhp @ 4200rpm and 380nm @ 1750-2500rpm, 1585kg too.

You'll certainly feel it - that's a 20% increase in both power and torque.

My brother is swapping a 800cc mini engine which probably has 40bhp for a 1375cc one which has closer to 80bhp.

I think he'll notice the difference!

That's the quoted unladen weight with no options. I think they've used a lot more aluminium in it to get the weight down. Shame the quoted economy figures are total bobbins though.

That's pretty standard with modern cars, unfortunately.
