Hi guys,

I go from brighton (from Lewes A27) to london every now and then, the M23 40limit roadworks are really quite annoying. The A22 seems to be an alternative, is it a decent free flowing road most of the time? Any speed cameras/overactive police?

Go there and see.

You should be able to drive along a road without needing advice from the Internet.

I'd rather not waste time money and patience sitting on a useless detour. Didn't realise it would do any harm to ask on a motoring forum. If I didn't get any replies I would try it out anyway, so what was the issue really?

What a ridiculous reply for this forum, those types of questions are exactly what this is for

It isn't a ridiculous reply at all.

Normally if a road goes from where you are to where you want to be, you drive along it.

It isn't really considered at all difficult or challenging to pluck up the courage to drive along a road, you just twiddle the steering wheel until you are pointing in the right direction and press on the accelerator until you are moving along at the desired velocity.

Help and advice is not normally needed.

To answer OP and not argue over itrolleyes

I dislike the A22 .

It,s 30 MPH through Nutley,Forest Row and also most of the way from FR to East Grinstead.

I would much prefer to use A23/M23 as it's 2 and 3 lane all the way to Hooley.

Its an annoying s l o w road mostly.... avoid. It can be OK on a bike in places, but I've never liked the road

This, I live next to the A22 and it's got way too many 30mph limits along it, Forest Row through East Grinstead is a slowl moving traffic jam at rush hour.

M/A23 is much quicker even with the road works.

Yep much better out of the peak times. I only use it from Newchapel to Croydon though, so get the best bits.

During rush hour its a slow thing going slow as most of it is solid centre lines and for good reason too (although some are questionable, but depends what power you have under the bonnet)

From Lewes the A26 is nice and quick. Then you reach the A22 Uckfield/Maresfield by-pass, imo one of the most dangerous roads in East Sussex. After that you have speed limits through Nutley, Wych Cross and Forest Row. As if that isn't enough you have the slog through East Grinstead and Felbridge. And finally more limits at Blindley Heath and Go

The alternative A275 from Lewes to Wych Cross is shorter but not much better. Plenty of DWLs. The chance of a tailback at the Cooksbridge level crossing. 40mph through Sounth Chailey. The queue at the double roundabout where it crosses the A272 at North Chailey. More 40mph limite at Sheffield Park and Danehill.

I wouldn't choose either route to travel to London.

Cheers for the useful info everyone. Thinking about it now I used the A22 a while back to get to grinstead this one time, was shockingly slow during the day, seems like a nice scenic route to take at night if I'm not in a rush though.

There is also the possibility of a Deer strike if you believe the signs through

Ashdown forest section of A22.

Take the A26 and then a short section of A22 up until the turning for Maresfield, take the first left towards Hartfield and then towards Edenbridge > Croydon.
It's much narrower and generally less traffic, although if you meet someone you can be stuck behind for some time.

In my youth I did Beachy Head to Croydon that way in 55mins......

B2026 to Crockham Hill - one of my favourites. The initial section from Fairwarp to Hartfield is across Ashdown Forest and limited to 40mph.

B269 from Crockham Hill to Warlingham then either drop down the hill to the A22 roundabout at the end of the Caterham bypass or stay on the B269 to Sanderstead.

yes Overtaking opportunities are limited. You need to be well acquainted with the road to take full advantage thereof.

If you are in Brighton, isn't worth a scoot West and get on the A24.

I ranted in the "knob" thread in GG couple of weeks ago when a van tried an overtake on my HGV

on the road between A264 and Hartfield southbound and oops a car coming other way.
