Took our 2012 RRS for its first annual service. Has covered 3800 motorway miles in 12 months, no heavy brake use!

Service report shows front brakes worn 10% and rears 35%!! Is the dealer trying it on so they can line themselves up to replace the rears at the next service, or are RRS that heavy on brakes?

Seems unfeasable to have gone through 35% of the rears in 3800 miles??

Erm how accurately do you think their estimates are?

Dealer con? No probably not. Business as usual knowing that most punters are numties - probably yes.

35% worn at 3800 miles means a set should likely last you 10,000 - 11,000 miles at that wear rate. Do you think that is excessive?

On the flip side if you are really concerned:

-ask the dealer how long they would expect the brake pads to last for your type of usage
-ask Land Rover direct the same question

If either is widely different to what your vehicle looks to be doing, use it as a leverage point that there must be something wrong with the brakes causing excessive wear and get them to fully check them out under warranty.

Don't the brakes also get used as part of the ASC function? If so that could explain the differential wear rate on the rear?

Cheers

I rang them to challenge their measurements. The service girl started off by saying its a very heavy car and the wear is normal. I posed the question that 300bhp suggested - how long does Land Rover estimate a set of brakes should last doing purely motorway miles. At that point she put me on hold for a few minutes then came back and started back tracking saying the tool they use to measure wear isn't that accurate and the wear is probably a lot less than that and not to worry blah blah blah.

Main dealers. Don't you love them.....

Appreciate the point about the ASC but it's a bit daft of the mechanic not to realise the F/R figures didn't make sense relative to each other.

I hate this sort of thing with garages - one told me my daughter's needed new front discs although the pads were fine (but obviously they'd change them both).
When I queried the relative wear rates of the pads and discs they said the pads had been replaced in the past. No they haven't, they're the original pads!
