Transferring Reg from vehicle on SORN

Chums your advice please. I have a vehicle currently subject to a SORN with a now expired MOT as the car is in storage. I have just been made an offer to sell the car 'as is' where the new owner will take the car, service, MOT, Tax etc for the road. However it is agreed that I will retain the current VRM and the car will go back to either its original VRM or another personalised plate owned by the buyer.

What is the best way to go about retaining my VRM by putting it back on retention?

I believe that is the case then this will only happen after the sale in which case the owner will then register the car in his name. So if we agree can he 'assign' the VRM to me on the retention document as he goes through the registration process?

I have sold a car with a plate on and we agreed that he would register it and return the plates. I drew up a bill of sale which excluded the rights to the plate and posted the application to retain before the sale. If I had wanted to go further, I suppose I could have put in a clause valuing the plate at a silly figure so that in the event of default, the buyer could be sued under the terms of the contract.

In my case, the bloke was entirely trustworthy and it went without hitch.
