Given there has been a lot of talk recently of turbos / rollers ( and I have just got my turbo so would like some pointers), I'm interested to know what sort of training you guys actually do on them!
I've downloaded some sufferfest videos, and was going to try and do 3 sessions a week (along with the usual commute, and a longer ride one day on the weekend)
What sort of stuff are you guys doing / what type of sessions etc.. All thoughts etc welcome!
Cheers,
Rich

I've just got back from what is probably my last post-work ride this year* frown so the turbo / rollers will get some action from Monday next week.

Tend to do a mix of sufferfest vids or plain old HIIT pyramids on the turbo. I use the rollers for technique and just spinning my legs out the day after a weekend ride.

Daniel.

There are quite a few TdF highlights videos on YouTube which last 45m. Pick one of the mountain stages, spend 10 minutes warming up then gradually increase speed/resistance until the summit. Try to replicate their increasing pain. I find it really pushes you and the time goes by quickly. Spend the last 5 minutes listening to Boardman talking and cool yourself down.

I'm using my rollers for recovery rides the day after my cross races, and a 10 min warm up, 30 min @85% followed by a ten minute warm down, will start interval based training once the cross season is finished, and hopefully on a sunday will get a mtb ride in just to play in the mud.

I'm doing 40 min hiit sessions as I'm already finishing work when it's dark.

Got a couple of cheeky rides planned for this weekend though

Great idea,

I've been using the one hour highlight shows, following the grand tours, really surprised how quick and hour, fast fwd through the adverts gets a 45min workout, usually to the last 40km of a tour stage, of which I'll cover significantly less distance! But get sweaty nonetheless.

Last winter I was doing 1 hour twice per week and a 4 hour spin once per week. Torture!
Thankfully I've relocated to Arizona so wont need the turbo until May when it gets too hot to cycle outside. biggrin

Just aerobic base stuff for me - two or three one hour sessions a week, either with Coach Troy or the Babylon 5 box set.

Mostly with the Babylon 5 box set...

About to start base training for the winter months but I'm normally doing this kind of thing.

I shall be doing a mixture of vo2 max intervals, hour of power which is threshold with bursts every so often, 2x20 min at threahold and straight 60 min threshold efforts.

Possibly will also do some steady state stuff which is meant to be 90% of threshold. Basically the only thing I'll be doing out on the road this winter will be endurance rides, mainly because rising for 5 hours on a turbo or without other people is dull. And lots of people go out for the long winter rides in the club.

Still haven't decided when to incorporate the vo2 stuff, think I might leave it till new year but do the other stuff in the meantime. I want to get to a stage where I am doing more qaulity training hours, it's all very well doing 250 miles and 13 hours a week but if it's mostly commuting it's mostly pointless.

Yep. And a lake of sweat underneath.

I'm thinking of getting a cheapo singlespeed/cheapo and converting to single for turbo use, does that make sense to use or am i missing something? planning on something with remote resistance so gears seem unecessary.
this will also satisfy n+1 wink

First session on mine today - did a sufferest video (Angels) - kept it interesting, and focused IMO. As it was the first session, I didn't really know how hard to push etc, but it certainly left a lake of sweat, and now my legs feels like jelly!
Loved it!!!

Do you have a cadence computer on your bike? I dont and so find it hard with the sufferfest videos but still love the sprints and rev up noise

Bought one especially for the turbo (I've got a 705, so can see hr/cadence & speed) - essential bit of kit id have said for the turbo.

I've been trying to find one that will do it all for me but dont want to spend £100+'s on one. Where did you get yours from?

Had my garmin ages , so only needed the additional sensor.
Worth keeping an eye on eBay I'd have thought

Sufferfest good - also look at trainerroad to help spice things up.

Reminds me I must get the Bushido dusted down and set back up - it's been a LAZY year cycling-wise!!

I think I'll be sorting TrainerRoad out soon. Looks like just what I need to keep me focused.

Can't really go wrong for $10 per month.
