Guys,
I know the words 'cheap' and 'competetive' can't normally be used in the same sentence (especially in motorsport!), but if you were thinking of taking up sprinting in a 'standard road class' what car would you go for?

So for say under £3k what would be available?

Always tops the leaderboards in class.

So I'd need an Elise then biggrin
I think it depends on your local club's rules in nearly all of the event's I entered the elises got moved into another class with caterhams and kit cars.

In the up to 2.0l class the S2000's go well on the longer circuits.

Hey Woody...

I ran the Tunbridge Wells All Circuit champ last year and the start of this in a standard Clio 172 Cup with 135k miles bought for £1900 quid.

Top 10 OA at a wet Goodwood, Class win in 9 from 11 starts last year and 6 from 6 this. This was in the up to 2l standard Prod car class.

Can recommend it highly enough.

I would be in a 106 XSi or rallye. £3k should see records in some places.

A standard Imprezza? wink

He'd be against more potent machinery in an Imprezza as he'd be placed in the over 2 litre class..

Think 911s etc

I dont know the categorys, just know that it would piss a pug 205. It was a suggestion as they are very cheap right now and I did not see any particular criterea laid down.

A Xsara VTS has got to be worth a look.Very very cheap ones around giving scope for decent tyres, brakes, suspension etc within budget.Even if the rear beam was knacked the going rate for a refurb is about £350.

The key thing if you want to be competitive is look closely at the class structure at the events you will do and decide from there. 4wd cars can have their own class so a standard Scooby will not do well, also a turbo will have a loading put on it so will move up the classes.
Clios can run well although not in ASWMC events as they don't suit the regs so well for example. I notice from your location BARC Midlands is probably your nearest club.

Valid point nonetheless. In a lot of championships an Imprezza would be in the over 2600 cc class due to having a 40% weighting for forced induction. Think TVR's, GT3's and big horsepower Evos and Scoobys.

You could buy an MG ZR for less than a grand and run it in the MGCC Speed series. There's a proper road going standard class, so very few changes needed to make it competitive. Goes to all the best venues nationwide.

Or a 106 rallye (S1) or AX GT would always be competitive in the sub 1400cc road going class.

All good stuff.

I run an Impreza in the Road Going Over 2000cc Class.

Once I found myself in class for four wheel drive cars (sprint at Curborough).

Cheers guys.
Liking the idea of the Clio 172, always thought they handled quite well.

Looking to stay as standard as I can. Only mods I'd make if permitted would be a cage and seats & harnesses.

My Brother runs a Clio 172 and has Hillclimbed and Rallied it. He also ran a 205GTi 1.9 in Hillclimbs and I believe he's of the opinion the 205 was quicker.

The Pugs weigh nothing where as the Clio is from a later generation and is a fair bit heavier.
