Right !!!!
I am at the end of my tether regarding fumes inside my 1600M and have thrown rediculous amounts of cash and time at it but cannot solve it - it is driving me mad (and the missus won't go anywhere in it coz it makes her feel sick).
After aquite a few postings and some great advice I have carried the following:-

1.Removed exhaust manifold cleaned and replaced gaskets.
2. Blocked up every visible hole in bulkead.
3. Glued carpet around bonnet release levers.
4. Stripped exhaust off - cleaned all joints - had re-welded here and there - replaced all brackets and clamps and sealed all joints (it must be ok coz if I cover the exhaust at the tail pipe the motor stalls)
5. Installed (albiet a bit makeshift and would appreciate any photos / advice) a secondary gear shift and hand brake gaitor - inc ashtray hole.
6. Removed original ford crank case breather catch tank and installed a mocal tank along with rocker cover vent which then vents into inlet manifold.

What the hell can I try now ?????

? How far does your exhaust pipe extend from the rear? mine is about in line with the bumpers and I do not get any staining on the rear of the car , should they be further out to prevent the fumes being sucked back.

The fumes are only there when I accelerate reasonably hard but are also there when slowing down.

I realise this is a thirty two year old motor but I cannot even go a couple of miles without feeling sick and getting a headache.

I love this car dearly and have spent 18 months bringing her back to life as close to original as I can after an idiot pulled it to bits and bastardised it 10 years ago and therefore do not want to part company with her but can't see the point in keeping if I can't drive her.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Harry

On my Taimar there is a discoloration on the carpet on the side of the transmission tunnel where the centre console doesn't fit tightly with it. I guess dirty air (exhaust..) is being sucked in there.

I'll give you £500 for it??

Start your engine with the bonnet open. let it tick over. remove the oil filler cap and look for any visible smoke coming out of the rocker cover. if you are smoking exessively, then you may well have knackered valve gides which could be giving you the problem. The top end of the engine shouldn't smoke too much unless engine is warm.

What did R&P Woods say when the car was on the rollers?

Split the work down into Chunks.

Fumes can only be:

1. exhaust related
2. Fuel leaks or fumes from tank
3. Fumes from engine itself due to pressurisation

If 3. is it top end (valve guides) or bottom end (bores / PCV valve)

if it is a worn top end then in theory you could fit an elbow to the rocker cover and vent through a tube under the rear of the car.

Are exessive fumes now coming from your breather tank?

I am up North in a few weeks time, so can take a look then. Other than that a group of us are at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting if you can stand driving with both windows down that long.

Neil.

Neil,
Woods' latest report says "fitted catch tank completely recirculating all engine fumes, this is more to prove a point and would ultimately be better with tank venting to atmosphere, we do run a small risk of blowing rocker cover out under very hard driving, road tested car and fumes are still very present but are definately exhaust, flat backed vehicles do create vacuum and draw fumes in badly. Seal any holes in rear of vehicle".

I have already been over the rear end armed with a silicone gun and can't find any more holes to block.

The current revised crank case breather system from Woods is as follows:-

1. Original ford catch tank removed entirely.
2. Interference fit elbow into crank case.
3. pipe from above elbow straight into catch tank.
4. Pipe from oil filler cap to catch tank but with Tee peice in line and a pipe from Tee peice into inlet manifold.

What do you think - does this sound ok.

Cheers
Graham

P.S. £500 eh how about a part ex I've always had a bit of thing for Vixens - how does it smell ??

Graham,

Really sorry to hear that you're still having problems.

By the sounds of it you've really been over the exhaust system. My breather arrangement is a little different to yours. I simply have a pipe heading straight from the crankcase adapter to the catch-tank, then another pipe from the tank exiting under the car. I originally had a t-piece with a pipe heading to the rocker cover, but the engine didn't seem too happy with that arrangement so it's running a standard rocker cover/filler cap at the moment.

Another long shot - my Webers stink a little bit on the over-run and when they spit back......not possible with yours?

Hmm. If the fumes really are as bad as you say there must be something really major wrong somewhere. Don't give up!

Best of luck,

Kris..

I have had similar problems with my car and I found problems with leaks both in the engine compartment and leaks into rear of car.

In the engine compartment I had problems both with exhaust leaks and leaks from breather, exhaust leaks are easy to fix in theory but usually need a complete stripdown of the exhust system. Breather problems I fixed by positive crankcase ventilation with the reather pipe, (without any one way valve) connected to intake filter.

I had leaks from rear of car from around the real lights, fixed by new gaskets and also from around the filler cap where the original gasket doesn't seal completely.

Hope any of this helps, the leaks around the filler cap was the last I found, I didn't realise that there could be so much smell coming from that small area.

Morning Fellas,
Thanks for your info and words of encouragement, I took the car out for a decent run last night and am now fairly convinced it is exhaust fumes entering the vehicle from somewhere so have decided to start with the rear lights and filler cap and work my way forwrad, also noticed this morning that the webasto roof had lost a couple of retining screws at the back which is making it lift and maybe some fumes are licking up the rear and sneaking in there.

Krispy,
You replied to my posting a while ago and told me about your gear lever gaiter - any chance of some pics or elaboration on what you did coz I can't get the one I made to fit snugly. Cheers

Neil,
Thanks for the offer - would be great if you could have a look when you come to Newcastle much appreciated - you have my number.

Cheers

Graham
