How well do E39 M5s cope with big miles (north of 160k) ??

Car has lots of history and has had time and attention spent on it with the current owner, but the fact is that it's 13 years old and I guess I'm a little wary.

I have an E32 with 130+k miles, which is doing fine, but not sure how E39s cope with years and miles (the V8 and mechanicals, but also electronics)

My E39 has 147000 on it at the mo. I bet its a damn site quieter engine then most current cars.

When I sold mine with 200.000 km (125K miles) it was still perfectly fine but this was a two owner car, that had lived its life on the motorway, and maintained regardless of cost.

They can certainly do high mileage but it is all about maintenance, the behaviour of previous owners and what kind of driving it has been subjected to.

My last one had 135k on it when I got rid and still ran like clockwork. Current one only has 86k on it.

Id have thought the issue is going to be running costs, theyre no different at that mileage so if it getting one with those sort of miles is a cunning plan to save cash im afraid thats not going to work! They seem to hold up well though, plenty of high milers on the m5board.

Running costs I can live with - this won't be a daily driver. It's more a case of 'potential ticking time-bomb' costs I'm rather more keen to avoid wink

Car has been well maintained if the history is anything to go by, but it's things like the lifespan of things like the electronic shocks, etc., that I'm less sure about.

Sounds as though it will probably be OK, but just needing to convince myself I guess.

Have a look on M5 Board, there is a thread called the high milage club - several members have over 200k and one has over 300k.

That said, it probably wasn't cheap getting there.

I had an M5 as a daily for 3 years and in the last 18 months it hit me with several £700 bills.

In my opinion the issue with these cars is age now, not milage so much.

Agreed. Tyres, brakes, water pump, thermostat etc will continue irelevent of age but the rust...

The E34 M5 has electronic front dampers but the E39 items are not (just regular struts).

Grand, thanks - there's a LOT of info on that board but that's one of the more useful threads I've seen so far.

Mine is currently showing just over 207,000 on the clock. I've had it for five years now and cant really think of anything for the price that I could replace it with. They dont make them like this any more.

Mine had 150,000 miles, mostly motorway in it's early life. High miles on the motorway is better than low miles spending time bouncing off the rev. limiter. Change the oil every 5,000 miles and don't drive her hard till the oil is up to full temperature.

wavey Mines on 166k now, excellent car and other than some rust which is getting to the point I want it sorted it's pretty much spot on. There is a bit of a vibration at the front under hard braking but that could just be bushes etc.

I'm not expecting it to be cheap to run though, next service is going to be a killer as I want the lot doing.
