Backpack Camera Bag

Hi, I'm appealing to the more knowledgeable on here in my search for a camera bag! However, I'm looking for something that is fairly small yet capable of holding my Nikon D300 with it's battery grip attached. The measurements are approximately 150mm x 150mm (6 x 6 near as dammit) but most bags I've looked at have a depth of around 140mm. I also want it to be reasonably small as I intend to use it just as a sight seeing type bag. Anyone know of anything that may fit the bill?

I used to use a Lowepro Toploader which was great but a bit of a pain to use all day long when sightseeing etc. I recently bought the Case Logic SLRC-205 bag and it's great, comfy to keep on all day and can use a D80 with battery grip and lens plus additional lens.

Have you looked at the Lowepro Slingshot range?

A 200 is the right size for a D2X body, hence will fit any Dx00 plus grip, will take two or three additional lenses up to about 105mm/135mm size - or a 70-300mm. (Wouldn't take a 70-200mm mind). Also room for spare batteries, cards and an SB-800/900 series.

Many thanks people but I'm not convinced I would get along with a sling type bag. Was hoping to locate something more along the backpack lines but I'm not familiar with the Case Logic so I'll certainly have a look see! :-)

I'm a fan of the FStop Gear range, they're a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. You choose an outer bag and padded camera bit to go inside depending on how much camera gear/other gear you want to carry. The best bit is the bags are designed like proper outdoor rucksacks and carry really well, rather than the normal padded box with straps camera bags.

I've got a Tamrac expedition 5, just the right size for me (can take it as hand luggage), takes my 550d, 300 F4, 70-200 2.8, 2 more small lenses, flashes, filters, tripod (using the straps on the outside).

I find it comfy to wear (used it for a 9 hour hike up a mountain).
I would probably have a expedition 6 or larger, but I fly too much and the 5 goes as hand luggage (plus I would then just fill it and have to carry more stuff!)

Foggy, what sort of lens are you likely to have attached to the D300 and will you be carrying anything else?

I had a Tamrac Adventure 6 which is pretty good but you'd struggle with a gripped body, fine without the grip. They do larger ones though, adventure 7,8 etc... I still have mine but now mainly use a Lowe pro slingshot as everything is much more accessible. Downside is that it's not as comfortable to carry long distances.

Thanks for all your input people! I've made significant inroads into selecting the right (for me) bag. I have a Jack-Wolfskin camera pack that I'm pleased with however it's just not deep enough to accept the D300 with it's grip attached. I do have a smaller shoulder type bag but that has the same problem, just not deep enough. Hence the search for something fairly small yet deep enough to accept the camera with grip attached and the lens I use the most which is a Nikkor 18-105mm. I also need the bag to hold a Nikkor 70-300 and my SB-600 flash but although I can find plenty of bags that are capable of holding all the kit, it's the grip attached that causes problems. Having said all that, I am seriously looking at two which I would appreciate comments on re quality etc. They are the KATA KT123-Go-20 and the TAMRAC Aero 70, both of which appear to have sufficient depth to accomodate everything! As usual, comments and observations are gratefully accepted! ;-)

Not used the Tamrac but those Kata bags 'go' bags are excellent. I'm not sure about that size as I'm only familiar with the bigger ones. It does look like it might be tight on the grip though.

Have you had a look at this by the way? Bloody marvellous resource.
