saw a 991 pootling through Tenby, we're a bit behind in these parts.
My wife:
That'a nice baby, what is it...an MG ?
Bless.
Weird to hear the stop start technology on a Porsche.
My wife preferred the classic lines of my old 993. I don't have the car anymore although I do now have a beard ( well a goatee ).
I'm not sure what any of this means but I found it quite amusing on a sunny afternoon.
looking at RS6 Avants now( I've got 2 kids ).
Has anyone gone from 911 to RS6 ?

OP - I have both an RS6 Avant (c6) and a GT3 so I get the arguments about dynamics of RS6, but I always think the comparison with a 911, or any other sports car, is missing the point of an RS6 Avant by a country mile.
With two kids and all the clobber that goes with them I can't think of anything I'd rather be in with all the family. I've had this car from new and I've never kept a family car this long and I will keep it for many years to come, as it's pretty bullet proof - no DRC issues - and I love it. I drive lots of new cars that are possible replacements and afterwards am always very happy to get back into my RS6.
It has super car performance and is laugh out loud fast....the surge just keeps coming. But it is also extremely comfortable, has all the toys and the gearbox is the best tiptronic I've driven, and downshifts properly when it should. I also like the fact it looks like any other A6 Avant and only attracts attention from those who know what it is.
It is heavy on fuel if you drive it like you stole it but on long cruises you can get sensible mid-20s, but it is not an expensive car to run and a used model is now extremely good value. Major services and oil services are not expensive compared with competing brands or other V10s and the driveline really is bullet-proof. The only real problem with the car is wheel bearings. Audi know about this and there have been two technical bulletins on this so far. If you go for one make sure the recalls on lights, brakes and wheel bearings have been done. Tyres cost approx £1k all round if you shop around and last around 12k miles. Brake pads last 12-15k miles and discs 25k miles.
Finally, it is last of V10s so scratch the itch, you can always sell it if you get bored; or tune it as it has one of the most tuneable engines Audi have produced - some of the "safe" figures that are achievable are totally mental but I haven't got bored of the 580bhp yet so haven't gone that route.
Happy to answer any other questions if you have them.

I've got a 2006 Cayenne S which deals with the school run for my two daughters (the school takes them in at 8.00 am so I am at work for 8.15) and the vast amount of bags and instruments which need to be taken in these days, so as a kids/family friendly car that goes like stink (when their not in it and I've got the stereo up freeking loud obviously) I really like it. Wish I'd got a Turbo with the air suspension mind....oh well. There are some bargains to be had out there....
thanks Porkafly. that is useful info to keep while I search.
actually, running a 911 for a year is probably good prep for the high costs of the Audi.
cracks me up when people ask about mpg with cars like this.
the costs you've illustrated for the RS6 don't seem so bad, apart from petrol.
I'm 911 through and through and my dream garage would have every model I could think of plus a Ferrari or two and a Lambo.
However, for now with car seats, buggies and the wife's clutter I think an Avant makes the best choice.
Was thinking along the lines of a Cayenne but I love the stealth aspect of the Avant. As one of you said, unless the observer is in the know most regular bods just think it's another boring Audi estate. Tee hee
Thanks for the comments guys. I'll keep you posted and with the obligatory tasteful pics.

We had a few 911s before we had kids, but we realised we needed more space and something more practical so when we sold it and the new owner drove it away I literally wept, but it doesn't have to be the end of 911 ownership - just a sojourn!
Big fast estates have a certain charm about them though, and whilst the RS6 is undoubtedly front end heavy dynamically and you wont want to be tracking this 2ton beast it is hugely competent and sure-footed and will serve a family well space wise; and put a smile on "Dad's" face when perhaps you're missing that sense of occasion. My wife also loves it and I have another friend who has one and his wife wants him to get something else for him to drive so it becomes her car solely. My wife used to get hassled by male drivers when she was driving the 911, so she feels less conspicuous in the RS6 and can show anything a clean pair of heals if she needs to.
Which leads me on to say that It can also be a license buster as it builds speed rapidly and imperceptibly, but as I said above few know what it is and it doesn't attract attention so is quite stealthy. I also like to know that when my wife is driving it with the kids in the back by herself she's less likely to skid, slide or put it in a ditch in the RS6 as she might have in the M5 we had as whilst it was a fun drive it was lairey in the wet and on greasy roads when pressing on, or going through a sequence of roundabouts.
Fuel is undoubtedly its achilles heel and I get about 200-250 miles per tank in mixed driving and much less in London driving.
Good luck with your search.

if you need more boot room for a week away, roof rack and box should give you around 400l.
