Maybe an odd thread, but here goes...

I was looking at a cayenes, and gravitated towards a turbo. smile 12-15k seems to get a lot of car and lots of choice... But...

Would I be nuts to look at an early 996 for that sort of cash? I appreciate the 12k ish I was looking at for a cayenne wouldn't get me much, and I'd need a small van for practical stuff... But is this a stupid thought i should get out of my head ASAP?

I need guidance... Or counselling

You either want a 4x4 or a sports car surely? It would seem an odd choice to me.

But hey, we are all different.

I don't "need" a 4x4 but want something more interesting thantmy diesel clk... The cayenne is great value for money although I know there will be high running costs, that's fine.

I have no kids, no dog, and no need for a big car but the power, spec and price of a cayenne turbo is very appealing.

A 996 would be more fun, similar running costs I recon, but I give up some space that would occasionally be handy. So a cheap van might be needed for trips to b&q etc.

I'm still reading the forum and elsewhere, but a few people seem to hate 996 while many others see them as bargains. I'm leaning towards the bargain camp at the moment smile

As you say, the 996 splits opinion as it always has. For sure, the model has caused and continues to cause more heated discussion than any other model including the cayenne!

I think your post proves that the potential 996 buyer today is very different these days I guess mainly due to the practicality and entry price of the model.

Do your research and ensure that you fully understand the running costs and potential risks and go from there.

Instead of a 996 & a van, how about a 996 & a Volvo V70?.....I've got both a my V70 is in many ways more practical than a van & is just about to pass 181k miles but more importantly is a 5 cylinder petrol turbo with all the toys & strangely people seem to want to move into the slower lane if you cruise up behind them on the motorway - if you look closely on ebay there are some massive V70 bargains biggrin

I have a 996 that I paid £13.5k for almost exactly a year ago so I'm sure you'd have no trouble picking up a decent one now for the kind of money you're talking about. I also have an E46 Touring for practical stuff. Through the summer the 996 is a the daily driver with the E46 used occasionally, in the winter it's the other way around. Seems to work well.

An interesting question.

A cayenne is a much better all rounder than a basic 996 is a drivers/sports car imo.

The cayenne is genuine fun and for all other duties ... well if you can live with the fuel costs, its one of the best do everything real world cars there is. Long distance, load lugging, offroad, around town, family on board, high speed in bad weather ... it does it all.

If you really want a 911 though, then theres only one answer. Vanilla 96s are ageing really nicely lookswise as well imo.

I would imagine the running costs of the Cayenne will outweigh that of a 996 by some distance!

I bought a Cayenne on the same basis as you mention 'Bang for ya Buck' theory - but it is incredibly thirsty and will come as a shock to most just how much fuel you can get through...

The alarming thing is you can go to the petrol station, and on the drive home the tank indicator has already moved showing that theres a large space in the tank where there was some fuel just minutes before.

But on the plus side - very capable car, hangs on in the twisty bits for such a hulk of a car too, pretty comfy, older models look better than the newer ones (imo!) and there's still a bundle of grunt there to make progress should you require.

4 wheel drive might come in handy over the next few months too.

Agree with this - my Cayenne Turbo used also go through oil and petrol like it was going out of fashion. Part of the reason I gave it up, got fed up with constantly filling it up and sticking 1ltr of oil every few thousand miles. One thing which did let me down we're the brakes.. The Cayenne had too much weight to scrub off those speeds. I believe the Turbo S had the bigger brakes to cope with this better..

Thanks all. Looks like I'm after a carrera then smile

Problem is, my list of "must haves" might be tough to source for the budget:

Xenons
Parking sensors (parked on the street)
Heated seats

As well as the usual decent mileage and condition etc etc

Part of the fun is the chase though right wink

After driving a couple of each I think I'm going to go for a 996. I don't "need" the extra space and the cayenne will be top of my list for a family car a some point in the future. Given the budget I am a little limited but am looking for...

2002 plate (post revisions and a little facelift I believe
Less than 60k miles
Dark colour
Dark interior
Soft leather
Heated and electric seats
Parking sensors
Sat nav
Bose
Full service history

Am I dreaming to get all this for 15k ish? Ideally I would like a manual, but the mrs prefers the tiptronic (and to be honest I could easily live with that 'box too). After seeing a few now and spending ages looking online I'm getting impatient!

Seems maybe a cabriolet will drop I to that range but manual coupes less likely.
