Obviously to those who know me the answer is obviously yes!

I have finally decided to sell my beloved GT2 as the lack of rear seats does really piss me off to be honest thus it doesn't get used with having a small family.
I am thinking about going backwards a little into a 911 turbo (930/964/996 or 997) i have always been a massive fan of the Marque having owned 8 911's!!

Today though i started thinking about a Nissan (I know Datsun!!) GTR. I actually like them and always have & to be honest as a practical well priced 911 turbo eater they are great value, so begs the question am i going mad?!!

I went from a 996 GT2 via a few other cars to a 996 turbo. I reckoned it would suit as a normal type drive as well as fun now and again. It was enjoyable and satisfied the need for porsche in the garage, but still the gap left by owning something like a GT2 is hard to overcome.

Like you i have thought about the nissan GTR route. I have never driven one, but understand the need to at least try and see what the ownership experience is like. There might be a time to do this, but there is never a compelling reason to go ahead with a purchase so many other iconic cars which need to be tried out first.

I considered a GTR having been amazed by the performance of one but they are very large, a bit plasticky (including the seats, the leather isn't leather) and I had not scratched my 911 itch yet having had Porsches before, but not the iconic one.

You've had 911's so in a different place to me, GTR running costs seem to be even more telephone numbers due to the very frequent service intervals, unique tyres etc, if you don't get on with it you can always sell it on (the rear seats are larger than a 911's so that's a plus)

Crimp I've driven thousands of miles in a gtr now, plenty of them on track & at the ring & they are a fantastic car. Any questions feel free to ask as they are very very different to 911s, even the turbo variants.

Are you going mad? If you are I'd guess it's completely unrelated wink

Not sure if this should be here or the 'Poverty Pork' thread but yesterday I went for an afternoon stroll around London and saw a bewinged 997 Turbo S in white parked up and thought "that looks a bit busy".
Then I saw a well used mk1 996 C4 on the move and thought it looked "right".

My car is a garage queen, I bought it at the limit of my budget, I've probably done a few thousand miles in the last year and next year I'll no doubt be renewing the warranty next April, keeping it spick & span and only taking it out on high days and holidays.
The satnav is rubbish, I can't install bluetooth or an ipod player (due to the warranty), but by 'eck does it shift!
I also run an old BMW and the wife has a Focus.

I'm seriously considering trading the turbo & BMW for a 996 C4S or Cayenne turbo, buying a set of winter tyres and just using it....

From what I have read over the last couple of years, the 911 turbo does seen to be the ultimate balance between everyday practicality and earth shattering performance.

Only this weekend I was thinking that the 997 Turbo might be the only car to tempt me out of the 996 GT3. I have never driven any of the turbo 911`s so I cannot really comment... But I do sympathise with you, as it must be a huge wrench to part with a good GT car.

IMHO I would not be interested in the GTR however capable they undoubtably are...

Tread carefully. thumbup

I still fancy a GTR but it would need to be the 2011 (530hp) model with 12 month servicing - Brucy Bonus if it has the service pack too! If you aren't going to track it running costs should be ok. Only issue for me is getting in and out of the garage without scratching it.

The only 911 turbo (water cooled) i would have would be a gen2 PDK, preferably 'S'. Big money though.

GT2 - special car. Going to take some beating.

Exactly how much rear seating is there in the GTR? I was always disappointed with the amount of room, given the size of the car.

The GT2 will take some beating i know.
I have owned a 996 Turbo and it was a great car, probably too good to be honest, but after all said and done just more practical for my boys and a great car for my European Hoon i am fancying doing next year, The GT2 is too precious.

The Nissan GTR is very good car especially the gen I, which was originally around £56k. The secondhand value seems to hold well. The GTR gen II and forthcoming III are nearly £80k - this is not good value given the quality of the interior, paintwork and high running costs.

This car is one of the few that you can actually put everything into race mode and not lose you fillings, it handles extremely well given it's 1.7t weight and most super cars would be hard pushed to keep up with it. The looks are challenging if you are not really into Japanese styling and it is a large car to manoeuvre.

The killer for me is it looks like a PS3 inside and materials used including the plastic looking leather makes it look cheap. The servicing intervals are often ( you can get a service pack for the first 3 years), the tyres around £2k for a set, from the forum it has some exspensive reliability issues and finally I have done the Jap fire cracker thing with the Evo VI. Worth doing to scratch the itch but boy was it expensive - at least £8k per year in maintenance, fuel, insurance etc. Even at 1.3T it went through brakes and tyres at an alarming rate.

A £40k porsche turbo is a much nicer place to be and £1k warranty gives you peace of mind. If you believe the reliability/ warranty threads then don't bother with warranty and spend the money with DMS, 9excellence etc to tune it to 550/600 bhp which would give Nissan GTR/ all super cars a very hard time.

I wouldn't swap my Box Spyder for a GTR, let alone anything else in the Porsche range.

I don't care if the GTR lapped the ring in 5mins dead, I still would not want one.

Not keen on the looks, interior I think is appalling for its price range, would get sickened by the year on year performance and styling tweaks, which quickly date older versions.

I simply don't like them, and they will quickly date like past skylines (which now look awful).

Where does the extra performance needs end? So what if it laps the ring faster, these times are soon shaded by more specialist material.

And if people asked what you drove you'd always just say a 'GTR'... Because deep down there would a twing of embarrasment with it being a Nissan.

Get a grip man, good ones don't grow on trees ! This isn't a case of maybe regretting selling it, rest assured you will. Maybe not not immediately, but in the goodness of time, trust me, you will.

I thought you'd sold yours mate?

If so do you regret it?
I know what you mean they are an iconic car, & obviously it has crossed my mind the potential regret as it drives of with a new owner, i might consider putting some benches in the back and belts, out of curiosity does anybody have any idea who could do this, alternatively just have belts fitted and the sprogs can sit on a cushion or something LOL

Remembered one of Toby's posts, http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... Not sure its for the 996 though, better check it out.

FWIW, I got out of the 997 GT2 into a Lambo, now looking to get back into the GT2.
