Does anyone know why there is a rectangular aluminium tray bolted to the chassis beneath the centre of the exhaust.

It's a convenient place to mount the exhaust, but it's really a chassis closing plate, putting the lid on an otherwise floppy box. Have you ever done the tupperware sandwich box trick? Take the lid off a plastic box .. you can twist it easily, it's floppy. now put the lid on properly and try again .. rigid as a rigid thing. This is what the plate is trying to achieve on your car .. put the lid on the sandwich box. (we'll conveniently forget for a moment the really floppy bit of the chassis where the engine sits ..)
