What's the latest view/advice on best choice of shocks to fit to a Chim 400 for road use?

I've been recommended to switch to Nitrons.

Many thanks.

Lots on here (including me) happy with Gaz Gold Pro. They transformed the handling of my car for sure. Nitrons are probably better, but they are twice the price ...

This.

GGP's are great on the Chimaera.

What ever you go for (I am very happy with GGP by the way) make sure that everything is properly set-up after they have settled (or checked after a few hundred miles) if set-up at the same time as fitting. There was someone on here who doesnt post anymore and he bought the expensive ones and was disapointed initially until correctly set-up.

For road use the standard springs are fine with the latest generation Bilsteins. I have just had all of mine replaced and it feels very tight, hugs the road and doesn't go light at speed or over crests.

How do they compare in price to GGP's if you dont mind me asking?

The parts with all springs, shocks and bushes are £800-900 plus VAT, fitting and alignment. Not cheap, but the quality of Eibach and Bilstein are not to be sniffed at. I am not saying they are the best but I can't see why you would need any more for road use.

My originals lasted 60k and 12 years.

Heard Protech are great for the road but Peter said his over heated on the track .

I enquired about Bilstein shock absorbers ,I could not get my head around it they have 20mm of adjustment and dual spring rates, what ever that means.

Anyone heard of dual rate sprigs and what is the benefits!

"The damper bodies have 3 circlip grooves on them to enable 20mm of ride height adjustment by repositioning the spring seat.

Highest groove is the standard position and then there are 2 lower grooves.

The rear dampers are tuned to run the orignal equipement eibach spring which is dual rate, having an initial stiffness 38N/mm followed by 60N/mm

Front springs are approx 50N/mm"

How can you tell if they have over heated ?
Does it cause a long term problem ? ie they need to be rebuilt / changed after over heating.

Oil thins out in side the damper and loses control of he spring forces, would imagine the car starts bouncing around and very unsettled.

Is there a big difference between Gaz and the Gaz Gold Pros?
Mines got Gaz but just standard I think, rides crap but I'm booked in at Willow for a full setup next week so hopefully will sort that right out.
I'm wondering if I should be adding shocks to the future wish list? Maybe I'm getting a head of myself and will wait to see what it's like after setup.

Thats two of us ,mines going in next week at Willow sports cars for the Nitrons to be fitted then when he is less busy full geo and rear poly bushes ..

Don`t think there is alot of difference between the nickles and the GGP`s.

GOT TO BE CAREFULL WHAT I SAY ! BANNED FROM THE TURBO THREAD

Catching up!

They become almost too hot to the touch and loose all their damping ability.

This happens with twin tube dampers and not with the monotube "Monos", (or Nitrons).

To be fair to the ProTechs, the model I had, (£500 jobbies) isn't designed for flat out pounding on the track and I am sure on our crowded roads you couldn't replicate track use.

I needed two new rear shocks after giving the original Bilsteins a track weekend hammering on that hot weekend in August ( I mean weekend - I did both full days on an airfield track meeting).

Talked about it to Mat Smith, who fitted Gaz Nickels to my (standard) car, on the basis that they cost less than Bilsteins and were adjustable, and were a good match to the adjustables I already had on the front. I do a mixture of road and track, and do not have Phazed's talent level and hence track speed.

He set the car up nicely, just on the stiff side of average, and I have no complaints, and nor has my wallet, as they were a lot cheaper than the prices being quoted above. Car feels not a lot different from when i had it on the standard Bilsteins, ie it feels predictable enough to be a real pleasure to drive, without jarring the hell out of my aged spine on our bumpy fen roads. So this solution suits my needs.

So what's the biggest difference when changing from Bilsteins to something like Nitrons?

I presume a lot more sure-footed!
