Hi folks,

I need to get this part made up (rear grille/numberplate holder). I've looked at the IVA regs and I 'think' I'll have to have a 2.5mm radius of curvature everywhere. I was really hoping to avoid this for cosmetic reasons frown. Can anyone confirm from personal experience if this is correct, or can I get away with a 0.5mm roc?

Not everywhere no. It's only when a body is able to contact it. There are regions that are outside of this requirement. What they will do for this item, when it is fitted, is to run a large sphere around it and where the surface of the sphere contacts it then it here that the reg comes into play. The inspector will use a 165mm sphere (about 6”) to represent the head and a 100mm sphere (4”) for the knees. If it comes into contact with a bit sticking out then that part must be rounded.

I'd imagine that the piece (which you are likely to be OK with as it stands in the image) is recessed behind an aperture as it's a grille.

It is recessed, but a 100mm sphere will get to most of it & I'd rather have a consistent finish.

I guess I'll have to go with 2.5mm then. I really don't want to get this made up a second time (£££) frown.

Vents are exempt from the 2.5mm rule and need only be blunted, so long as the distance between two edges is less than 40mm wink

Not quite the way I'm reading the rules. (IVA Section 16 RS5,6,7,8)
Grills etc with the following gaps and required radius.
Gap <10mm Blunted
Gap 10 - 25 Radius 0.5mm
Gap 25 - 40 Radius 1mm
Gap >40 - Radius 2.5mm

So the grill in question would need to be 1mm radius.

I hadn't seen 7 & 8 on the next page whistle. I'll RTFM properly next time.

Cheers bud thumbup

ETA: I don't suppose you know which rule exactly 40mm fits in (rule 7 or rule 8)? It's not clear in the manual. I want to make the holes wider as it suits the look of the car better, so can I go to 39mm or 40mm whilest staying within the 1mm rule? Ie. does rule 7 mean "up to and including 40mm"?

Ahh, Sorry about that, not a problem I have had to deal with, I only get side vents on Cobras.
1mm is easy enough to do though.
