My wifes colleague had her M5 stolen last week, apparently by the same method that all these other bmws have been swiped. She phoned BMW complain and they said 'we could have sent you a gadget out that would have prevented the theft. Did you not watch Watchdog?'

Is anyone aware of a 'gadget' fix?

There was certainly no 'gadget' fix featured on the Watchdog programme,I think who ever your wife spoke to at BMW was talking out of his/her backside.

There is talk of a software upgrade, however that's confined to the X5/6,and further down the line the 3 Series, the M5 has never been mentioned though.

Another example of misdirection from BMW.

All they are doing is feeding us all different information from different dealerships all around the UK which just adds to the confusion. There is no definitive singular source that they are briefing from. Their communications / PR departments are a disgrace.

I rang BMW UK on 0800 083 4397 a week or two ago and asked about my Aug 07 build M5 and was told my dealer would contact me within 6-8 weeks to book the car in for a fix. The person didn't know what was going to be done. I left my name, reg and phone number and am holding my breath. not.

I've missed this... is there an issue that leaves the M5 open to easy theft?

If you start the car by turning the key, then you're fine.
If you start the car by pushing a button, then you've a problem.

I phoned Dick Lovett in Hungerford and they told me its only M5s registered after March 2007 that are affected. My late 2006 has a push button start.

What they mean is if your cars older than 5 yrs they can't be arsed to fix it!!!

It affects cars with push button start too. I use Dick L in Hungerford and as soon as I get the contact from them it's going in!

Spoke to HQ today. 2 to 3 weeks and there will be a 100% fix for all models. Apparently the fixes are already being run on cars in the workshops with near 100% success but BMW said that the issue is shared by some other manufacturers as they use the same software, thats what is taking the time. As we all know, X5 and X6 are already being rolled out, with the 3 series fix on the way soon. As soon as the rest gets the all clear customers will get the call.

However........

He did say that some insurance companies were refusing to cover cars stolen by the process discussed due to it being a design flaw and not thieves just forcing the ignition key in the barrel. He didn't say which ones but said we could phone our providers to find out. I then asked if BMW were willing to cover that car in a case where insurance cover was revoked he said that because its a criminal act by the thief they are not accountable for any losses felt by the customer. Effectively, if your car gets nicked and your insurance company refuse to pay out because its a BMW design flaw then you're on your own. His advice was, and i cannot believe he said this: 'do as my daughter did and buy 2 Rottwielers to protect your property'. Erm.... that cannot be a BMW endorsed idea can it??

I have a 56 plate and it was nicked in this fashion. BMW are lying when they say that cars prior to March 07 are immune/not at risk.
Buy a steering lock or sell it.

Well I've just been onto BMW UK and confirmed that my car, 2006 M5 is not affected by the security breach OBD/key cloning issue. I've been categorically told that its only cars between 2007 and 2011 which have been compromised and that mine can not be stolen via through this well publicised weaknesses. I've asked for them to confirm this in writing to me. The agent was reluctant but agreed to do the same.

And I was told my M6 (06 plate, built 11-05) would get the fix.

Spoke to BMW CS yesterday and they said dealer would contact me as fix was ready.

Dealer called today and it is booked in. Said it would take an hour.

My advice, call BMW CS rather than wait.

mine has been done today - the "part number" is 0061530 convert convenient opening, they did not seem too sure what exactly it was but thought it disabled several things such as convenient opening and others - anyone know more about exactly what the change is?

It took around an hour and they did clean my car and it was free.
