Paying for a car at the other end of the country....

Well a car was won on ebay but happens to be at the opposite end of the country.
The seller is able to arrange delivery but wants payment to be made via bank transfer, what is there to stop them from just keeping the money and not shipping the car, how should I progress this?
(Or any PHers able to let me borrow a car transporter/car with tow bar and car transporter this coming weekend for a trip from Orpington to Aberdeen and back...) - I will of course cover all costs

There is a site where you post the car and end points and the transporter guys bid on the job. I was close to having to use it to save an MGR MGF VVC press car owned by a member of the Scottish branch. Luckily a local stepped up.

Paypal is your safest for ebay, but he loses a percentage to them and also it is risky for him, but you are in the driving seat over the transaction, not him (see what I did there?)

Would it be possible to arrange my own collection through Shiply and then just transfer the money when the driver gets there and is loading the car?
As soon as you click send for a bank transfer the money is gone and will never come back (without knowing the guy's real address and sending round the financial advisors...).
I worked with a guy who lost £4k that way; as soon as the money was transferred the seller disappeared, despite the paper trail and checks he had done beforehand.
After a month of futile attempts to find him/sort it out/get his car he gave it up as a lesson in life.
Aberdeen isn't all that far away (it's the UK ffs, not Australia); get a cheap flight or a train up and drive the car back.

The car doesn't drive (gearbox fault) else thats what I would be doing.

I am a little nervous about it, if I can't arrange a safer payment method i'm going to have to pull out....(and be one of those annoying ebayers!, although not intentionally)
I have bought five cars and sold one in the UK whilst actually being in Australia.
If they are genuine, call and have a chat. I have done this a few times so they know I am genuine. When I bought my 911 I ended up chatting with the guy for about half an hour as we had very similar taste in cars and had owned many similar vehicles. I ended up buying two from him and when I landed in the UK taking a few of his Ferrari's out for a test drive - unfortunately the Bently GT was having a wheel refurb

When sending Money from an Australian bank account to a UK bank account, you need to provide the full address of the receiver which has to be confirmed by the receivers bank. For some reason they dont do that UK to UK account.
Anyway as I said, I have had six deals via opposite side of the world and never an issue. Mixture of Ebay and PH.

I've regularly bought cars and bikes from the other end of the country. At some point you're going to have to trust someone!
Having said that let the seller know you have people up here to have a look at the car (and take pictures if needed) and see what they say. If they're dodgy you should be able to tell quite quickly.

Been quoted £450 to have all corners fixed, spotted new gearbox for £250 and shouldnt be more than £300 to fit. Allowing for a little more cleaning/polishing WBAC have offered £6,500.....
Had an idea for where I can get a tow car/minibus - I see a saturday evening - sunday roadtrip coming on.....
The Ebay username is Aberdeen Arnold and I instantly thought of Arnold Clark which is a big company that sells cars.
I wouldn't be suprised if this was stolen off the forecourt and found again (just a stab in the dark guess).
The location is listed as Bridge of Don and I work in Bridge of Don so can pop round to check out and give you piece of mind if you so wish.
