Idiot brake disc question

Changed the front brake pads on the Cerb the other day and noticed that on one side when I had the pads out the brake disc was totally free and not held in place. Should this be the case, or should the disc be held tight even with the pads out?

The disk is trapped between the wheel and the hub. It comes loose when you take the wheel off. Sometimes they are quite tight on the studs so they take a bit of a knock to free them. On some cars there is an extra small screw holding the disk to the hub.

yes the disc would be loose when the wheel is off as you have found out, but my advice would be to take the disc off and make sure the back is clean so you do not get any wheel shake due to some muck falling behind the disc when you found out that it was loose. It is easy to clean while you have the wheel off and can prevent problems latter on.

wise words indeed. i always use a couple of wheel nuts to hold the disc in place whilst i change the pads etc, it only takes a tiny bit of muck between the disc and hub to mess it all up for you ..
