Car(s) broken into

Woke up this morning to a rather strange sequence of events that has now got me rather freaked out and extremely confused.
Walked out to the M3, which was parked on the drive as always, this morning only to see the driver’s door was slightly ajar. I racked my brains to remember if I may have left it open last night but was almost positive that I hadn't so jumped in the car only to see the glove box/ashtray open – again racked my brain to try and remember if I was looking for something last night and again was almost positive I hadn’t. Start the car and get a boot open warning light and at this point I realised everything was not well! Went into the boot, golf clubs, booster pack, new pair of trainers were all there and the only thing missing is my gym bag. Cue more racking of the brain to try and remember if I had taken the bag in the house until I glance round and notice the R8’s driver door also ajar and at this point I start to panic...a lot!
Jumped in the R8, all compartments were open, papers everywhere, cd’s and iPod that were previously in the glove box on the passenger seat – fair enough, cars have been broken into!
What I can’t figure out is how did they get into both cars? There is no visible damage and I have the keys in the house.
Why did they take a couple of things of no value and leave everything of value? They went to the bother of taking the iPod out the glove box then leave it on the seat
R8 is now locked again, both keys are with me at work and the M3 is at work with me as well but should I be concerned that the car is going to disappear in the near future of was this just the work of a skilled, but extremely stupid, junkie?

The M3 I’m pretty sure was locked (not 100% right enough) but R8 was definitely locked and secure, I wasn’t sleepwalking or if i was i have hidden my gym bag from myself and it couldn’t have been a prank as no-one has access to my house/keys and i would have hoped they would have told me by now if it was.
Had the window been smashed or something i would accept break in but the fact there is no sign of break in/no alarm activation/etc is extremely freaky and strange

Do you live with anyone else? Someone have access to spare keys? As all the easy to shift stuff was left and someone is having a good laugh at your expense. 
Being all serious and paranoid perhaps someone is looking at identity theft? Have you lost bank letters etc that were in the car? Not tyring to sound strange, but if you can afford them cars, then I presume that you have a good credit rating etc, which these thiefs would like to utilise.

Nope, stay myself, no-one has spare keys to my house, i can only think it was someone looking for something specific (no idea what though) and thought it would be in the gym bag or i'm being over paranoid and it was the easy thing to grab and something disturbed them and they just left the ipod, etcBeing all serious and paranoid perhaps someone is looking at identity theft? With the identity theft suggestion it's a possibility but the M3's owners pack (handbook, service book, etc) was left on the passenger seat as well. The only paperwork in the car was petrol reciepts and some hotel invoices.
It's probably just a break in but the no damage thing makes me think it's too sophisticated for that but if it wasn't the cars would be gone i suppose....can't see me getting much sleep tonight!
It's an E46 M3 so don't think the OBD port issue applies? I did think that the ecu's could have been accessed with them planning to come back but if they were doing that they'd probably leave the cars untouched inside so i didn't notice anyone has been in them.
I'll give Audi/BMW a phone and see if i can get them re-coded asap and stick the cars in the garage until it's done...probably being paranoid but better safe than sorry i suppose

I have a camera but typically was having pc problems so it's only set up for PIR view and not HD recording...best get it fixed asap as well!COuld be worth getting a camera set up?
Phoned the non-emergency line and they were actually fairly helpful and said someone would call me later and they may possibly send someone out to fingerprint/check for DNA....a bit OTT i think and don't really want the front of my house looking like a crime scene, my neighbours curtains twitch enough as it is without them looking out and seeing police crawling about my cars!

If the door was only ajar then the window would be slightly down till it was closed properly. So they proberly didnt close it fully so not to make any noise , so more than likley got in with a key.
Yep, the boot and drivers door of both cars were left ajar as closing them would have been too noticable...i have all the keys so it's definitely a strange one!
