Hi all. I'm not only new to this forum but new to any forum, and I need some of your collective advice. I'm dubiously building a Can-Am, I say dubiously because I wasn't quite ready for how deep your wallet has to be, not that the build is dubious, but it might be eek

I've got an LS376/515 going in it, at $7,900 from the good ol USofA you can't really say no, and that's with the controller kit and ancilliaries inc air con. Fantastic. Trouble is I've no idea where to get the idler from that deletes the power steering pump. American Speed don't do it, any ideas?

Secondly I'm guessing about the SPA dash and the tacho wiring. The SPA loom has a 2 core screen for the tacho with a blue and red, which one do I use? And which LS loom bulkhead connector pin does it go to? And do I need a 1k pull up resistor?

Just so you know, I'm an electronic engineer by trade so I will understand what you say, and this is my 15th kit car/resto project and I still enjoy it, started at 19 with a Dutton and 37 years later I've still got the bloody disease banghead

Just so you know as well,me and the car are at Leicester and anyone is welome to come and laugh (or give advice) about any other pitfalls I might find, like stuff that I need to move to reverse the inlet manifold.......and and and.

Tango - If you read this I'm the short bloke you talked to at the Ultima open day - Thanks m8.

Thanks Guys

Hi Trev,

We got our idler from Knight Racing Services http://www.knightracingservices.co.uk/ speak to Peter, he will supply one or know where you can go for one.

Where abouts in Leicester are you? I am just north of Leicester so could pop in at some point to have a nosey around!

Hi MacG (Why does no-ne put their name LOL.) smile

Thanks so much, that's solved a problem, wonderful. You're welcome to drop in, I'm in South Leicester, LE2. Drop a text to 07733 003136 and arrange something, not at home until 27th May and the car is also not at home so you'll need me to find it. If you are anything to do with the Britcar entry I'm very priveliged, suspension set up advice very welcome. I think there's not enough camber on the rears, may be wrong. Of course any advice from a builder is appreciated.

Thanks again

Trev

Hi Dave,

I would love to do it, and pleased you like the white. Not my idea, just seen an R8 in Leicester in white and thought it might suit a Can-Am. Audi's idea really.

Shall I book project 16 in for 2013 cool

Hi Treve,
I admire your passion to be on your 15th project and it's an Ultima too. Congratulations! I see you have chosen a white Can-Am. Same as my order which should be arriving around Christmas. I chose a Can-Am in white because of the hot and sunny weather we have around here in summer. Definitely felt that a GTR would have been a sauna in the sun. Have you any other photos of your Can-Am?

Hey Steve and Craig,

It's the first I've heard that it's hard to pass the IVA with an LS376. Why is it hard? Have you done it? BTW if you put your LS in what do I look out for? Someone mentioned that there is a coolant sensor that needs moving, any advice on that?

Any help appreciated

what year is the engine? If later than 2002 you will have to meet the latest emissions figures. That includes Cats.
I don't believe you will get anywhere near with the cam you have.

Hi Trev,

Sorry forgot to add my name at the bottom. 27th May is a long way off! I am out of the country for a couple of weeks then getting back on the Friday prior to the Donington round on 3rd Nov, so won't be able to pop by for about 3 weeks. Just added on FB to have a look at the pictures too. Will drop you a line when I am back as I would like to have a good nosey!

Thanks all,

Looks like I need twice the cats to pass the bloody emissions, esp because I have the power graph for my engine from the builder now and it makes 568hp@6,300rpm. Happy days, lets see. BTW Jonny I meant 27th October rolleyes. Text me anytime after next Sat, would love some advice and a nose m8.

I needed a 1k resister to get a SPA shift light to work with a GM ECU.

I found SPA technical unhelpful as to what signals they require.

What makes you think additional CATs will solve the problem?

The issue is the amount of unburnt fuel getting through due to valve overlap. This is worse at low revs which is where the test will be done.
Some form of 'extra air valve' would be the best fix. Bike engines have this called a 'Pair Valve' it adds air to the exhaust header so that the fuel can burn off in the exhaust.

For the test make sure your tickover is as high as the test will allow (1500rpm) and the high tickover is done at 3000rpm (test says 2500-3000).
