Thoughts on what bike to get?

The Tribal has some very good reviews in respect of value for money. If you are looking for a road bike, the Specialized Allez also has positive reviews.
As for the hybrid route - you will be getting a different type of bike to the road version. The Sirrus range and fx range (from Trek), seem to be pretty popular, and they are good bikes.
Ebay will probably have some good deals on used bikes, so take a look and see what you could get for your money.
If you are in no rush, take a look at some of the online reviews - the cycling mags will have more details.

hybrids have a few benefits over road bikes and that is the uproight position which affords greater visibility hence they are popular with commuters and the flat bars which are wider than drops thus most people find them more stable.
you can still get up a good pace on hybrids just avoid anything with suspension forks, cheap forks are really heavy and dont offer anything in terms of comfort as they have such poor compression and rebound characteristics that they make the bike handle poorly. just fit some big (700x35) tyres and pump them up to about 95 psi.... uber comfy!
i like mrs pablo's pinancle neo two a lot, £400 from evans and 21lbs, well spec'd and well built. you could do a lot worse.

)The carbon fork is about comfort as much as lightness. It will reduce judder and be a more comfortable ride.
I have not RIDDEN either, but the reviews for Triban are absoltuely rave. Best in price bracket by a distance, frame like more expensive bikes etc etc

Zelos back on sale at £330, I'd go for the Virtuoso at £380 though. I have one and it's doing the job well.
Halfords pricing is extemely variable, I guess they are more interested in the quoted savings figures. The tdf is currently at £500 lol.
