Is it possible to convert mobile contract to PAYG?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but thought it was the most suitable place.

My sister-in-law is in a bit of a financial mess.Part of that mess involves having 6(!) mobile contracts (1 for her and each of her kids).She wants to cancel but they have a year to run on them.

As per the title,if she contacted her provider and explained that she can not afford the monthly bils (she cant) could they convert to pay as you go?

Probably not. However, she may be able to downgrade the tariff that she is on - used to be able to do this with some networks once past a certain point in the contract period.

Can she not sell the handset and pay off the contract, and then buy a £10 Nokia on PAYG?
