They work well. We had a three way trio with these on the way over to Le Mans a couple of years back, one lad was on his bike. We used them 'hands free', by virtue of a microphone and push button on a lead positioned around the chest, the walkie talkies were left in the centre console.
Although much better than using the device hand to mouth, I'm still not sure that our method was 100% legit in the eyes of the law.

Get a CB radio. They're legal to use while driving and aren't too expensive. Plus your car will look like it's remote controlled.
