I was able to pick them up in heathrow before heading to Mumbai on business, I was told to ensure that I didn't try to bring any back to the uk so I was sure to spend everything I had left in the airport.
I think the rules are that you should not bring back more than you took in, or something like that.ChrisBMW said:
I may be wrong or at least picked the guy up incorrectly but I'm fairly sure he said it was an offence to take any out it the country.
That's correct. In fact I just checked Wikipedia and it says this:"Legally, foreign nationals are forbidden from importing or exporting rupees; Indian nationals can import and export only up to 7,500 rupees at a time, and the possession of 500- and 1,000-rupee notes in Nepal is prohibited."
I have travelled between the UK and India quite a lot. Although they do not check everyone, it is IMHO best to be safe, and get into and out of rupees at the Indian airport.
