Is it similar at all to the one in a 996 turbo? Or more like a 'normal' turbo engine. Running to 450bhp I am thinking it must be something special!
Never driven or been in one but considering chopping in my 996t for one. Any views?

Similar technology is used on the Cayenne engines as on the 911 turbo - adapted to 8 cylinders in a Vee.

First gen Cayenne (9PA up to MY06) has a 4.5 litre, all aluminium, 90 degree V8 with two water cooled turbochargers, intake port fuel injection, variable cam timing and 450bhp - turbo S versions had 500 bhp

Facelift (9PA MY08) has 4.8 litre DFI version with better economy and power (around 500bhp)

Gen2 Cayenne (92A model) has similar 4.8 litre DFI with around the same power but car is 200kg lighter.

Thanks you all. Sounds great.

Will go and look at one or two when I narrow it down. Was considering the S, but feel that turbo is the way to go.

Why not have both and buy a Turbo S?

I will look at the classifieds later today, but I fear it will be out of my budget!

The engine is indeed awesome, however tends to have a major drinking problem wink My friends used to the call my old Cayenne "all consuming"

seeing as you have both, 996 and cayenne turbo, how do they compare Craig?

hi matey. They dont really tbh.

The 996 is just devastatingly quick in all environments, ride is a bit harsh sometimes but I use it most days so dont notice that anymore. The power is relentless after small lag.

The Cayenne is very capable, comfortable and very rapid. It rolls about a bit even with the air suspension but the grip is superb considering it's bulk and height. the winter pack makes it very useable in bad weather, snow etc even with road tyres on it. Power delivery is again fairly relentless.

Both good cars, the Cayenne likes a drink though!

Thanks mate, will have a think.
Have the 996 at the moment, just trying to work out if swapping for the cayenne will be a mistake!
