Transmission warning this morning

So, driving reasonably spiritedly this morning and I very briefly have a yellow/orange cog and the message, transmission fault, please drive moderately (or words close to this). Is this a known precursor to any well known issues(?) or if not, does anyone have any ideas as to the impending doom I'm facing here?

On the e46 SMG at least if you drive really hard and overheat the transmission it the yellow cod will flash for a bit then stay on solid once the transmission has cooled down.
