MOT test in York
Discussion
Hi, I have booked an MOT with Faber garage in York as I have used them for work before and are good and trustworthy. However I see that Halfords is offering the MOT for half price at around £27. Would anyone say it's worth going there instead, are they less strict or do they fail you easier compared to family run garages?
Thanks in advance.

I'd stick with Faber tbh. Given the dealings I've had with both I'd certainly rate Faber the higher of the 2!
Ian's a sound bloke who loves his Morris Minors, Mark's once gave me a free car (!) and the boss man's Alan's an ex-BR chap who's pretty sound as well.
All that being said, I haven't been there in a while as I don't need their services any more, but past experiences were pretty good all in all one minor disagreement aside.
Cheers,
Tom

In theory every MOT should be a totally objective matter. In theory.
If you are totally confident that the car requires no work, then take it to the cheapest place. There is an MOT only centre on the industrial estate off James Street (not council run) who don't work on cars, so that's about as objective as you'll get.

2000 model Micra, the car failed miserably today! Loads of corrosion is the main culprit and I have been quoted between 400-500 to get all the repairs done. Scrap value is £35... We are leaving the country in a few months so need to shift the car soon. Still got 2 weeks of old MOT and current insurance to use though. Can anyone give some advice on what best to do - if we get the car repaired, can we realistically sell it for 800-900? The rest of the car is in good condition, 50000 miles with new oil and plugs, new exhaust backbox and alternator and the outer body is in great condition, as is the interior. It's automatic too. We bought it for 1250 (lying man) so if we got repairs done for 500 then sell it for 800 then great, but is that LIKELY? and within 2 weeks? I mean logically, if the work was done it would be a sound car again and with low mileage so surely worth about 800? Or should we just put it on Autotrader for 300-400 and say work would cost 400-500? Would people appreciate the honesty and buy it thinking that 500 work+400 for the car equals a good bargain in the end, or would it really never sell?

A garage a friend knows said they'd do the work for a very good price. Gonna get that done and then sell the car normally.
Alot of people will ask for details so they can check a cars mot history if its failed in the past. That list would put alot of people off, so definitely check what its post repair value would be before you spend money fixing it up.

Hmm I see. That's odd though since I don't think anyone will expect a 12 year old car to have passed all it's MOTS without any work being done at some point. Plus having a newly repaired and welded car is surely more attractive than having one that is not.
My text should have been more "Alot of people will ask for details so they can check a cars mot history To find what its failed on in the past and what advisories it has had."
I would expect the majority of the buying public to not like the idea of the car having been rusty in vital areas. Whilst not having the knowledge or knowhow to check if its been welded correctly or bodged to pass a MOT, which does happen alot, especially in certain areas. Most people would rather have a car that hasn't rusted in the first place so hasn't needed any welding.
If the work can be done well enough at the right price though then go for it.
