However I got to the bit that says "I will do test drives unless you have verifiable license & fully comp insurance."
that's a bit harsh
;p

Why? Would let some random drive your £15k without that proof?http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Disagree.
What would happen if the owner allowed someone to drive his car knowing that there was no insurance and there was an accident?
I am viewing a car on Sunday that if it is what we want we will have a drive and leave with the car. I have added the car to my policy, and if we do not buy it will have to pay for a couple of days cover.
Easy.

Harsh because they want you to be legal? Are you actually being serious? http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

The OP is pointing out that they have made an error.
They have said that they WILL do test drives UNLESS you show them those documents rather than saying they WILL NOT do test drives UNLESS you show them those documents.
The seller will drive the car, unless the purchaser can provide evidence of cover. No error there. They have said that they WILL do test drives UNLESS you show them those documents rather than saying they WILL NOT do test drives UNLESS you show them those documents.

No, he is saying I (i.e. the seller) will do test drives unless documents provided.
Which is pretty fari tbh. It means they aren't hiding anything and are happy to let people out in the car, but they can only drive it by either buying it, or proving they are legal to drive it.For those not grasping this (OP....
) here are two hypothetical situations:-You the potential buyer test drive the car with no fully comp insurance. On the test drive you crash the car into a ditch and write it off. Evidently you will not want to buy it now as it's total scrap. And the seller has nothing in writing from you to state you will take responsibility for any costs. As you are uninsured the sellers insurance company is unlikely to want to pay out. Thus the seller will have lost their £15,000 car and have bugger all to show for it.
-Same as above, but rather than a ditch another uninsured driver crashes into you while on the test drive, writing the car off.
Really there is no gain for the seller and a heck of a lot to lose should something happen.
If you as a "potential buyer" truly object this you can quite frankly go and make use of the large and extensive used or new car dealerships and traders. Most of these will have trade insurance specifically for allowing demonstration test drives encase either of the above scenarios should actually happen.
