Autoglass and Free Bosch Wipers

We have a Mk3 Golf as a pool car/runaround and it needed a replacement windscreen this week. As the insurance policy doesn't have windscreen cover we had a ring round to get the best price for a new screen.

On avearge they came out between £125 - £145 + vat

I gave autoglass a call as i thought a free pair of wipers would be a bonus- their quote £547 + VAT!!!

Bugger me i'd want a free set of tyres for that!

How can they be so astronomically expensive compared to the other companies? Is this another example of Insurance/preferred repairer closed shop?

I was stunned a few years back when I smashed a windscreen and called for a replacement. I was told it was £550 or something like that, but when I said I was paying, it came down to £300 or so. I then said "if I tell you how I did it and you've never seen replaced one becoasue of this, will you knock some more off?" to which he did, so I think I paid somehting like £250.

What I don't get is, surely, if its a repeat/volume customer, it would be cheaper, not loads more? Very odd.

I rang them recently about a Ford Fiesta.
£265 ! Exactly £200 more than I ended up paying for one.

It was an M5 (E39) and it had an electric reach/rake adj. I'd put my disklock on and pushed the bar up to meet the screen then took my key out. I watched the wheel retract, then saw the top of the disklock hit the screen...thought to myself "the motors will cut out...and if they dont' they wont be strong enough to *smash* .."

Baws. I'd had the car less than 24 hours.

Well, I'd just spunked pretty much every penny on this 'new' M5 so the thought of having to cough up another few hundred quid didnt appeal. To be fair, if he'd have said no, it wouldnt have mattered.....but as it was, he had a laugh (at my expense) but gave me a few quid more off (at his expense ).

The real bummer was that I'd already parked up but as it was a new car (to me), when a better parking space became avaiable (living in London at the time, on street parking), like the fanny I was (am), I went an moved it, you know, to be safe....and thats what happened.

I have the same feature on my E38; I will now avoid disklocks

Windscreen cover is one addition to my premium that I reckon is a 'must' - cost me £75 when Autoglass replaced my screen recently.

Just like last month when I did my routine oil top up, you'll know an S62's thirst for 10W/60. Bit of a rush, drove for 10 mins and smelt oil. I had cross threaded the filler cap in the dark and it made one helluva mess!
