My Dad uses his 2010 RR mainly for shooting involving muddy fields. Last weekend he got stuck and is wondering whether to get another set of more aggressive tyres to swap as and when or just for the winter. Its got to be OK on the roads as well. The tyres are standard issue. Think the wheels are 20's

Tyres will make a difference but ultimately, if there is no traction... There is no traction. These cars are good but they can't break the rules of physics.

The problem you'll have asking about tyres here is that everyone will have their own suggestion/recommendation. Tyre choice is very personal and will always be a compromise, no matter what you choose.

If this was a bit of a one-off, just chalk it up to experience and continue with what you've got. If not and if he hasn't done it before, I'd suggest a days training first. That way he'll learn how to make the best of what he has but it'll also help him understand what to look for in a tyre to suit his needs (the instructor would probably be able to advise too) . Then, go & have a chat with a tyre specialist or even one of the parts guys in the local Landy dealer, as they often have a good idea about what'll be suitable.

I nearly got stuck in the bog that was Silverstone this July. Pretty sure it was me rather than the RR that was at fault wink

There are no offroad tyres in the 255/50/20 size that come as standard on the Range Rover. You can fit 275/45/20s (a bit smaller in circumference so speedo over-reads) or 285/50/20 (bigger so speedo under-reads). Inform your insurance company if you are fitting non-standard sized tyres.

Another alternative is to buy 19" wheels (but not many styles fit over the big brakes, as there is more choice.

Cooper Zeon LTZs are supposed to be good.

Thanks all. It seems a bit crazy that there aren't offload Tyres for it in the correct size. Do land rover allow you the option of specifying tyre type when ordering the car new?

Generally, people who fit off road tyres to their Land Rovers are not interested in having 20" wheels so there isn't the demand for tyre makers to manufacturer 20" versions of their off road tyres.

I opted for 20" wheels on our D4 however, I have a spare set of 19" wheels with Winter tyres. There was much more choice + lower cost of 19" winter tyres compared to the 20" variant. Same applies to second hand 19" wheels.
