Gatso - No lines on Road?
Discussion
Reading a post on a forum I used to frequent, it appears as if one member has been double flashed by a GATSO, however there were no painted lines on the road as the road had been recently resurfaced.
The problem is thus, the road in question is a 30mph limit, recently reduced from NSL, although no speed has been mentioned, he illudes to over 3 times the posted limit, so 90mph+
What's the position regarding lines painted on the road? From memory, I think they are only available as a secondary check, assuming there is film in the camera, is there enough evidence to prosecute?
My guess is there is...

The radar forms the "prior opinion" of speeding and the two photographs corroborate that opinion by showing the distance travelled in a given time.
The lines are the only fixed reference point for the camera. They must be shown on the pictures in order to calculate the distance travelled otherwise there is no corroboration of the speed.

Apparently there usually are lines on the road..

Not true, there is no requirement for there to be white lines on the road. The police can add these onto the photo afterward. They are simply a secondary check.
Well, I'd say that the Pepipoo poster is wrong.
The lines are the calibration.
They cannot be added to the photo later.
There would be no fixed reference point.
Surely adding anything to the photo later, white lines or otherwise is akin to tampering with evidence?
I seem to recall a case several years ago where a Solicitor got snapped, and got the case thrown out as the Police / Cam Partnership supplied a "blown up" version of the pic, and not the original...

I would have thought it's not tampering with the evidence, the evidence to prove the offence is in the image, overlaying an image to find the precise measurements is merely extrapolating data from the image.

Yes there may have been a case that hit the media where a photo was enlarged and this wasn't acceptable, but placing a transparent plastic overlay on a photo, with lines on the plastic to the same scale as the usual lines on the road would have appeared, doesn't alter the photo in any way - so it's not really the same thing.

But what guarantee is there that the scale is correct?
03:05, thought I was bad! It's dead easy to do a scale calculation, but like everything else mistakes can occur so if this method is ever used it's one other thing worth checking. There's no guarantee of anything except death, taxes and getting a NIP

He's just told me the speed was 135mph...
In a Vauxhall Omega 2.5
Maybe you mean 35mph?!!
If he managed 135 in a 30 he deserves a bloody trophy, not a ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![]()
Yes, ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE MILES PER HOUR
An A road with a couple of minor bends, tree lined through a village apparently.

I'd guess he's BS-ing you then. No lines on the 'road' so his 'speeding ban' will never appear and he will have 'beaten the system' and everyone will think he's great.
For that sort of offence I don't think it's a nip he needs to be worried about coming through his door......... The lines are there to corroborate the reading from camera. They wouldn't be able to do that but I'd guess a visit would be on the cards.
Anyway a foolhardy speed through a built up area.
If it ever happened.
Which I doubt.
MoJo.
