Whats the best stuff to use for discoloured black trim on exterior ?

It's mostly turned greyish white.

Warm it gently with a heat gun/hairdryer brings it up like new

I tried this on my V70 rear bumper, and now it looks like a strange slug has crawled all over it...perhaps because I neglected to 'seal' it or suchlike?
