Mouse/Cursor Problem

The mouse/cursor on my laptop has got a mind of its own it constantly shoots down to the bottom left or up to the top right.
This has happened a couple of time in the past and a reboot has cured the problems but today its being persistent, making the computer unusable.
Ive tried unplugging the USB mouse and using the touchpad but its exactly the same.
Dell Inspiron 8000 if that helps
