Could someone please get the pictures to work as I am hopeless at it!

http://www.alldogsmatter.co.uk/?ella,1550

She has been here a couple of hours now and so far, so good. She is much bigger than she looks, will happily sit quietly but loves attention. Smart as a whip and already seems to be working out what the rules are and is very anxious to please. So far, all looks good. Lovely adorable, super expressive mutt and with a bit of TLC I think she will be a fantastic dog.

I am officially smitten but to be fair, I have only known her two hours!

Her owner died and she is clearly a bit lost and confused but she is already clearly trying hard to work out the rules. Gorgeous, gentle nature so far and she seems very affectionate. Always loved this breed and she seems to be a lovely beast :-D

Ali, she is now half asleep, her nose maybe an inch from me and she seems to love being close and being praised. She already responds to basic commands and you can see she is trying really hard to please. Early days of course but so far she seems to be a really lovely old thing. I am smitten :-D

Really touched by this, she looks to be a gorgeous old girl and it has made me smile that she's found a nice new owner.

She is clearly confused and distressed, but she is now having a snooze and becomes much more relaxed when I give her a little stroke. She seems nit to need constant attention, but she is very affectionate. I think her old owner neglected her a bit but as they could not cope as opposed to being wilful.

She just started making that purring sound some dogs make so I guess she is reasonably happy here. Looking like I got very lucky but only a few hours in... :-)

Lovely dog.

GSDs are brilliant dogs, my two were the best companions I could ever have wished for.

Owning a dog can be such a rewarding experience - and it's great you were able to take on an older dog as well. They so often get overlooked in kennels.

GSD's are great dogs.
We took on a rescue one 11 or so yrs ago, older dog more like 11 or 12.Had a couple of yrs out of him, besides a few issues with hating small dogs with a passion he was great.
Eventually his back end went and his bladder lost the plot.

Thanks all. I wanted an older dog anyway as they are hard to home and of course rescue is the way to go.

I love the breed but it was pure luck that the first dog they asked me to take was Ella and I couldn't turn down a GSD.

she is trying so hard to respond as required and so far she seems to be a placid, gentle, curious and well behaved. Really am so pleased I seen to have got so lucky :-)

Our first walk was great :-) consider she is fairly underweight and malnourished but she pulls like a steam train. She will be really a handful when she is at full strength, or would be if she was not so great on her lead. took less than five mins for her to realise I set the pace and she seemed more than happy not to linger for interesting smells. she happy walked past people in range of her extending lead and simply showed no interest at all.

She met my neighbors 13 year old kid today as well. Was totally fine. she really is a lovely old girl and been very well trained I think.

Only issue so far is she seems to need to be near me but I went outside and left her alone for ten mins and she was fine. If I go into a room and close the door she simply waits silently.

she is still confused and unsure but she is a very confidant dog. she seems to be bonding so well in such a short time and shows no signs yet of being anything other than a lovely dog with all the best traits of her breed. Fingers crossed still but so far it seems I have got so lucky with such a great mutt.

Oh, and I got a tail wag!

I know, I must be so dull right now but it's all new to me and I am loving every minute of getting to know the outsized pile of fur. :-)

I'll shut up now!

Lovely looking dog. Good on you for taking her on. Hope you give each other years of happiness.

The number of abandoned dogs on the site you linked to is shocking. I know dogs are abandoned all of the time, but I still can't get my head around why someone would take on a dog and then just leave them when they realise what is actually involved.

But thankfully there are people like you to re-address the balance smile

I wish you many happy times together. I still really miss mine who was my companion for 15 years after I found her as a stray (I took her to the RSPCA and when she wasn't claimed took her on). I think she might have been a Christmas pup from the year before and was very underweight and totally untrained. I was embarassed to walk her at first as she was so scrawny, it took her ages to fill out and I got fed up explaining to concerned people that I was not starving her.

Mine used to pull at first, but we were trained by a police dog handler, initially using a horse lunge rein so that she could roam but only so far. (She was also trained to leap up and down barking if you tweaked her collar, which was very handy to deter unwanted callers at the front door.)

She is the only GSD I've had and whether it was due to the poor start to her life she was very much a one person dog and was a bit insecure for the first few years, not wanting me out of her sight at first. (She also ate the kitchen and had a fondness for chewing seat belts in the car in her first few months with me)

Well done for taking her on, I'm sure your vacuum cleaner will be on overtime from now on.

This was her when she was getting on a bit
