My turn this morning - red cog came up and went, then the yellow. The car's not in gear, won't go into gear and the engine won't restart. I managed to coast into a handy petrol station. BMW Emergency Service duly turned up and read a load of codes relating to the SMG. They tried changing the relay (the salmon-coloured one?) but this didn't make any difference so it was a quick tow to the local BMW dealership 100m away. There's no sign of the pump priming like there usually is.

I'm covered by the comprehensive BMW warranty so will see what the garage discover next week.

bad luck on the smg. Did you get a loaner car from them? If so what did you get?

Considering it happened on a Saturday, I'm pretty satisfied with the efficiency and had a loan car sorted through Enterprise 4 or 5 hours later.

It's a diesel vauxhall insignia (somewhat optimistically SRi badged) that sounds like a Ford Transit, however it's wheels and no complaints there. First car with a manual transmission that I've driven for 16 months too biggrin

Update for anyone interested - gearbox is now out and the cause is seemingly a clutch slave cylinder failure/leak which has distributed fluid everywhere.

The good news is that it's all covered under the warranty, including a new clutch and flywheel due to damage as a consequence of the mechanical failure.

How long does the warranty for a gearbox last?

I think the warranty lasts as long as you keep paying for it and you haven't modified the car.

Im sure the price would into the 000's if it was not for the warranty.

A warranty is a must on these new M's

I'm pleased to say that my car is now back and in rude health once again. I have a £250 excess on my policy but don't begrudge paying that considering the costs of parts and labour that have gone into getting it back on the road.

Been told to take it easy for 500-1000 miles with the new clutch. Due to the amount of time I'm travelling overseas at the moment that might take a while to do. tumbleweed

Just today I've started getting a stload of yellow cogs (and even an engine fault) light on the check control frown

Clutch is blatantly slipping like it's covered in grease or something too, just won't really engage.

Have already dropped it off at BMW but they can't look at until Monday. I really hope that whatever it is is covered by the AUC warranty, only had the car 4 months :/

Apparently, the clutch isn't covered under the AUC warranty (which seems a bit st, given I've only had the car for four months.)

They've advised I call the dealer I bought the car from to see if they'll contribute to the cost, but the Sales Manager isn't returning my calls.
