I just can't fathom why one way flights are so ridiculously expensive?

I'm pricing some flights where I am trying to join the back of a holiday with the front of a business trip to save me 24+ hours of flight and stopovers it's 2-4x the cost for a one way flight compared to a return flight (ie two flights).

Those airlines just really, really don't want you to fly one way do they?

Are these kind of intineraries priced worse if you are using internet searches?

Book it with the cheapest return portion available (doesnt matter when, even if its months away or if its in a lower class) then do a no show.

Done it myself hundred of times (either booked personally or via corporate TA )- saves literally thousands in some cases.

Alternatively book with miles- no restrictions on them for one ways

So, you're finishing your holiday, then flying on somewhere else to start a business trip. Surely your company is in the same situation, where they only have to book the return leg for you? Can't you book a ticket incorporating all stops and then claim the return leg back on expenses?

I can never seem to find a return ticket that is cheaper than a one-way single.
But you are darn correct that the single tickets are stupidly over-priced when you consider you are only using the plane for one journey and not two.

AJI, try just a simple, high volume route like LHR > JFK with BA.. £400-500 return or £1000 one way!

Maybe for short-haul EU flights it's different. Unfortunately I'm visiting 3 continents frown

Simon, a one way from work back to home is 50% higher than a return ticket if I were starting in London. It's crazy!

I guess they have their economic reasons for doing it this way but it doesn't seem very rational, even a little bit insulting.

Same goes for some 2-3 stop flights that together are a fraction of the price of a direct flight.
