Picked up my "new" SL55 today. Thanks for all the help and replies on here, which really warned me of the pitfalls with these cars and what to look out for. It was advice on this forum which persuaded me to arrange a PPI, and to use W Gates, (no affiliation) without whom (in the person of Terry Gates ) I would have made a bad mistake.
After looking at four cars, (two inspected by Terry) eventually we found one that even he couldn't find anything wrong with.
First impressions are awesome power, and awesome noise. After years of 993 ownership, this is a huge change.
I am absolutely delighted with the car.

I viewed three cars before this one. The first had o/s/f accident damage and the mileage was inconsistent with wear and tear on the vehicle. .
The second had 5mm of water in the boot, and looked generally tired.
The third had rear accident damage, a leaking o/s/f strut and major electrical problems. Front tyres and discs were in need of immediate replacement.
Terry and I couldn't find anything wrong with the one i bought after 1.5 hours of looking for faults.
sure you are right but the 996 i had was close to 530bhp not standard plus a fair weight advantage so the standard sl55 just felt a little sluggish i guess its what you get used too with the pully upgrade and remap it feels very close to 996 that i had

I am fairly sure that on paper at least they have virtually the same performance 0-100 as a 996tt.

I would also expect the 996 to be a good bit quicker to 60 as it will have better traction off the line. I don't find my '55 that good at getting its power down.BigBen said:

the 4wd is a big advantage , went to a track day in sl55 off the line with tc off was "interesting" with it on was not too bad and for a heavy car it handled very nicely which surprised me to be honest

The 996/7 TT was something I considered, as an alternative to this car, but after 15 years of aircooled 911 ownership, I figured it was time for a change. The 996 onwards shape never floated my boat aesthetically, to be honest, although the 997 is a huge improvement in terms of looks, and no doubt a very competent steer. My girlfirend's views also had to be taken into account, she is not a 911 fan.
I may well return to the Porsche fold one day, who knows, all I can say is I am enjoying the SL55 hugely at the moment. Unbelievable power and sound, I am driving round with a huge grin on my face most of the time.

that makes 2 of us then its certainly the best sounding car ive owned :-)

I don't know about the headlights, but it is an '04 car, so yes, pre-facelift I assume.
