A good rule of thumb is 'as much as you can get away with before it starts pinking'

Ideally you want a strobe gun or similar but if not a rough and ready way is to find yourself a reasonably steep hill and drive up it in fourth. You don't want to labour the engine but you don't want it revving it's nuts off in second!

Advance the timing slightly each time until you start to get pinking and them come back a couple degrees so that the pinking stops.

You can get away with that method with the 4.0s although some people would cry at the thought!

You should not by any means do that with the 5.0s as they have fragile pistons and WILL break!

28 degrees advance with the vacumn disconnected at about 3K rpm iirc.

i set my old 400 to 28 degrees anything more and it started to pink.

I set to 28 max @ 3.5k on the 4.0's and that works just fine you may get away with 30+ but how bad do you want to find out

tks guys.how come my tuner set it at 20 and my mechanice told me it was way too much and put it back at 14???on the dyno it made a pretty big difference!!!

Are you loosing the vac pipe with that setup..?

No vac as always, i tried 28 > 32 and noticed no improvement so my max advance is 28 on a stock 400 maybe 30/32 would run OK this was when i was running a dizzy though Daz, istill run the same max advance with the MS but like your car mine run's st loads of advance at cruise/light throttle
