Hooning with a 928
Discussion
Found myself with a few free hours and the sun being out for the 1st time in weeks so decided to get the 928 out and get to grips with it.
I was a bit unsure on the whole Auto setup, it's not something i look for in a sports car but the S4 is something else. Stick it in 3 and it's simply fantastic, uses all the rev range and never seems to change at the wrong time. Will happily run up to 120 in third on the ol' private test track.
Managed 100 odd miles with a massive grin on my puss. Not unlike
I wasn't prepared for just how good it would feel when you're pushing on. The exhaust definitely needs uncorked. I think that will bring a new level of pleasure to the table so shopping for new x pipe this week. That engine though
I would love to have that in something 904 sized. It's so torquey and tuneful. Tremendous.
The balance of the car is simply perfect, loads up and sweeps round corners at a healthy rate of knots and totally hides the weight of the thing. Couple of soggy roads that the back end started to step out on and the car just soaks it up and powers on. It's competent but not to it's detriment.
911 is on the cards at some point but what a machine to see me through till then. Looking forward to getting a proper run with the rest of the PH Ecosse lads asap.
Porsche really do know what they're doing. Great, great car.
Got up to 18mpg now too, which is nice.
A rather chuffed,
Olie

I'm on my fourth! A friend had a 964 which originally pulled me into the brand, but there is something quite special about the 928.
My current one is a 91' GT and I bought it from the classifieds on here. The last owner had it 11 years. As for hooning, I had to attend Worthing hospital a couple of weeks back from London as an emergency when my father fell seriously ill. I can't mention speeds but the car was so well planted which is partly due to its perfect 50/50 weight distribution. It was designed to replace the 911, but the high oil prices and massive cult 911 fan base decided that it was not to be. What you have now, is an appreciating classic which the purists have loved to hate. I've also looked at chopping it in for something else, but being as I've already done this three times previously, I've decided to keep it!
If you haven't got an X-pipe yet, then I strongly recommend getting one. You need to speak with Richard at Ritech Systems. His systems are really well made and they don't turn your car into a screaming monster. Instead they give a nice low burble but they voice their opinion quite loudly over 4500rpm and this is where you really notice it. It's not in your face, it's refined and it sounds great. They will also net you a few more horses but I've not gotten this car onto a dyno yet. The GT is basically just a cammed up S4, with higher lift and duration. I would guess that it should be around the 350 mark if the engine is ok. I had it pulled apart and inspected by Paul Anderson and we replaced the chain tensioners. I also asked him to refrest the bottom end with mains and shells and rings, but he said there was no wear and it was not required.. it had 160k on the clock so that speaks volumes about the engineering.
Here's my pipe as it was delivered and fitted

There are few things which I dislike, such as the heavy clutch, unforgiving gear selector if you get it wrong etc but it still makes me smile when I get in it, and just about everyone and anyone takes an interest in it. The supercharger itch is getting worse too. I've got Carl at 928 International on my FB and I keep looking at the kits

There is a lot more to a GT than just being a cammed up S4...
1) Different pistons to achieve the 10:1 compression
2) Different engine management maps both in the LH and EZK
3) The intake is port-matched to the heads
4) Shorter final drive in the 5spd transaxle (2.73:1 instead of the S4's 2.64:1)
5) Shorter throw gear change via different linkage and shorter gear lever
6) Smaller and lighter silenceres/resonators in the exhaust system + dual outlet
7) Lighter aircon compressor - introduced on the 1991 S4 too
7) Rolled wheel arches all round
8) Sports suspension as standard, while optional on the S4
Btw, the clutch should not be heavy at all - check the spring, which provides assistance - it is directly above the pedal. As for the gear change - if all bushings are in decent condition, the G28.55 is actually not bad at all.
The 928 S4/GT/GTS will all benefit from a remap. Porsche left a lot on the table for the sake of having one engine for all markets back in 1987. Have a look at JDS Porsche and the services he offers. By the way, I have no affiliation with John - just a happy customer...

Thanks for the info. I know of John and the Shark tuner, he supplied my new clutch ball-joint (in metal) as I went through two plastic OEM ones fairly quickly. I wonder if that spring is even there?
That might explain the heavy pedal!
It could do with a remap as I haven't done anything since the exhaust but I'm thinking about the supercharger conversion although if the compression is raised on the GT, that might make things a little dangerous. Have you any advice concerning supercharging the GT?

good to hear you're still enjoying the 928. Found the S4 a truly sophisticated thug, and long runs are epic. Properly comfortable too, which helps keep the ladies quiet
X-Pipe was installed by Paul Anderson and seems to add an extra dimension - giving a soundtrack similar to the DB9, albeit slightly louder
Keep up the enjoyment

I loved mine and wish I had used it more when I had it.
