can employer take back sick pay when you leave?

I have just left my job and received my final pay slip friday only to discover that my previous employer has converted my sick pay to "unpaid time off" and deducted over £400 from my wages? the days in question were months ago and for emergency dental treatment when I had an abcess and root canal. I am salaried if that makes a difference?

Is this right and just sour grapes or have they taken the piss? (it wouldnt be the first time and is also one of the reasons I left)

I am not a lawyer so can't help, but generally I find in emplyment law that if it seems unfair then it isn't legal.
In this case that definitely seems like a piss take.

Unless there is a specific provision for this in the contract if employment, the deduction is unlawful. Statutory sick pay could never be lawfully deducted.
