V-Power in Canada

I have been in Canada for a week, for very sad reasons, but life must go on. My host has kindly lent me his Canadian-built Lexus 330 SUV, which is a smooth ride (3.3 litre V6 with 5 speed switchable autobox). I have just filled the car up before returning it to my host. V-Power in Canada has 91 Octane. Other petrol comes in at 87 and 89. Assuming that ratings are calculated in the same way as they are in Europe, this is a strikingly lower number, reflecting, I assume, tighter emissions rules.

Driving standards in Toronto are pretty good. The roads take a beating from the harsh winters. At least this time I wasn't pulled by the cops (and let go) for disobeying a local traffic rule, as I was on my previous visit.

AFAIK Canadians use MON instead of RON

Canadian Octane is calculated just like US Octane. UK Octane ratings use the RON figure, which is why octane ratings for the same fuel in the UK seem to be about 5 points higher; UK 98 Octane is the equivalent of 92-93 in the US or Canada.

In the USA and Canada it's the average of RON + MON. But while we're at it, RX330s are designed to run on 87.. you don't need 91 in an RX or an ES (IS, GS and LS all need 91+)

I didn't put 91 in, just the medium grade. Some stations have 94.

As of next week I'm going to be living in canada. Must remember to drive on the right and avoid bears.

Bears, nuthin', it's the Moose that get yer.

The worst thing about Canada is all the Stop signs. Also terrible coffee, and poutine. Everything else pretty much rocks.

I was going to say 91 is rather low... Most premium grade stuff is 93

Next time tho.. 87 is fine.

Add on 4-5 to the US/Canada number to get the UK number.

Petro-Canada sells 94, but the highest Shell offering that I saw was 91.

The Lexus RX 330 is a bit of a gas guzzler (urban driving, no hooning). A tank of petrol costs roughly the same number of Canadian dollars as a tank would cost in number of pounds, and so is a fair bit cheaper than a tank in the UK.
