Hi Folks,
As the title says I am having some issues with the fuel pump, last week whilst out and about we stopped and done a bit of shopping, upon returning I turned the key in the ignition and didn't hear the pump prime, and subsequentley the car wouldn't start, after resetting alarms and immobiliser for about 20mins it finally fired up.
On Saturday once again I had the car out and driving along when the engine suddenly cut out, quickly turned the ignition off and on and it was ok, now this has happened 3 or 4 times in the past and usually just after a service which seemed odd, but it's one of these things that cannot be replicated and when checked out no trace or indication why.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

James.

Fuel Pump Relay? Mine was dodgy and caused me to fail to start on at least 2 occasions requiring the AA. For a temporary fix I ended up with another battery in my boot and a pair of wires running to the fuel pump, bypassing the relay. To start the car: open boot, connect wires (fuel pump runs), shut boot, get into car, start car, drive to end point, stop car, open boot, remove wires from battery, close boot!

I ended up taking the cover off the relay and cleaning the contacts as I was having problems locating a replacement relay. Seemed to do the trick as it's been fine ever since (was about 4 years ago).

I had fuel pump relay problems. It only gets worse.

My experience here:

Just to conclude this thread, I've managed to sort the problem out smile

Turns out it was the fuel switch relay (it's the tallest relay sticking out of the fuse board) which was playing up.

Whilst not having exactly the same symptoms as others to begin with (because I was able to restart the engine immediately), as of last weekend the car started to cut out and refuse to start for a little while.

The TVR part number is M1317. Otherwise you can can buy a Durite 0-723-23 relay or call a Vauxhall dealership and quote one of these part numbers: 90225811, 90230894, 90240698, 90378651 (think they're all the same item in their system). Despite some previous threads stating that it's a £12 part, the cheapest I could find was ordering through TVR Power at about £37 incl delivery. Most places have it at approx £30 incl vat plus a huge delivery charge. Picking up from Vauxhall would've come to £45 hehe

The other day my mechanic mentioned how my steering felt a little heavy, and it might be in my mind, but it suddenly feels a little lighter since fitting the new relay. Did I read somewhere that the power steering has something to do with this relay too?

You need a new fuel pump relay. The switch inside the relay is the problem. A temporary fix is to wrap a paper clip across two of the large prongs as this complete the fuel pump circuit and will get you home should it happen again. It's an Opel/Vauxhall part. £23 from
Euro car parts!

Good to hear. How much did you end up paying?

£31.00 from a stockist over here, it was also in stock, Forgot to add earlier that fuseboard was changed about a year and a half ago due to damp ingress, thats when I started to have some problems, my car had always been garaged prior to this, but for about a month we had horizontal rain and I had no cover coupled with a leak on the passenger door a frame.

Kind regards,

James
