Good afternoon my porcine friends...

My R Reg 996 C2 has failed its MOT on the emmissions. There's definitely a hole somewhere anyway and my local specialist had previously commented so it's not a surprise.

Are there options other than a new system? One of those plaster type kits perhaps?

If I buy the exhaust below for +/- £650 is that the complete system the garage would need to fit?

Also, GCS Engineering mentioned a 'sports exhaust' for about £1,000 which may include fitting Would that make a huge difference?

Thank you as ever,

DM

Unless the stock exhaust system is just trashed you're better off leaving it in the car though fixing the hole.

A hole was given as the cause but where is the hole? One can't just say "oh there's a hole in the exhaust" and then not be able to point the hole out to you.

Does this hole cause the CEL to come on? What are the error codes?

Finding an aftermarket exhaust system that works as well as the stock one and doesn't bring any downsides with it is hard. Based on the many posts on this subject more often than not the aftermarket exhaust is a downgrade from the stock system though there are a few aftermarket systems that appear to work pretty good. But they are not cheap.

Were it my car, I'd exhaust (no pun) my options on fixing the stock ehaust system before I ventured into the aftermarket exhaust wilderness.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Was the car really hot when they did the emissions test? I've known my old Boxster struggle on the emissions if it is a cold engine & especially it has a small leak on one of the system joins. Dependant on what you want to do, if it is only the back boxes leaking then they might be repairable in the short term or you could buy used boxes that appear on ebay for between £150-250 for a pair. The other thing you will find is that if someone gives you a fixed fitting price hold them to it...the bolts on the clamps rust to dust eventually & have to be cut/ground off which is a sh**ty job even with the right kit.

Carnewal do some good replacement options BTW smile

Hmmm...It's not a visible hole but the mechanic says 'I can feel it ' I can ge my fist in there'

Is that repairable?

Incidentally there has been no loss in performance or fuel economy. It does sound great though :-)

There are no error codes or lights either

If the hole is that big it probably wont weld up suitably unless you can put a piece of metal in as well & even then may not be the best solution.

Secondhand boxes seem to be around £100 each on ebay though there is a pair starting at under £50 which need the baffles fixing.

I think you need to find out though where the hole is? If it is the boxes, you can always get a quick fix which will make you smile! How about a pair of muffler bypass pipes (l have a pair as well) though get ready to apologise if you have any neighbours smile

I can always ask a friend if he still has his old boxes....he had one which had the seam going & put a pair of Carnewal boxes on & I just need to check he bought them back home as the OS was fine.

OK, thank you for all the replies.

The zorst's properly FUBARed it seems. I've asked them to order the sports / 100Db version. They're listed as 'not recommended for road user' rather than 'not for road use' and 100Db doesn't seem to bad. I live in the middle of nowhere anyway :-)

Good luck with the new system - it will bed itself 'in' and get louder for a while until it settles down.

FWIW, I ran a pair of 'muffler bypass' pipes for a while as I had 'the need' to as some of us PHers do(ie no back boxes at all!) and whilst they caused some occasional 'tutting' from SWMBO for early morning weekend trips, they passed the MOT and other than at a higher rpm, didnt cause too many looks whilst travelling....they were a bit like an early warning siren when I came back home though and the kettle was always 'on'! biggrin
